OAKLAND, Calif. - The Oakland A's have unveiled 50 Stomper statues throughout Oakland as part of the Stomper in the Town public art project. The 50 statues, which are in honor of the team's 50 years in Oakland, will be on display throughout the 2018 season.
The six-foot statues were created into unique works of art by local artists. Artists were given two months to transform a blank Stomper into authentically Oakland creations, including MC Hammer Stomper, Hip-Hop Stomper, and Tourist Stomper. Artists used a variety of materials, including paint, mirrors, mosaic tiles, glitter, and baseball cards.
Fans can sponsor a Stomper statue with the option to take him home at the end of the exhibit. Proceeds from the sponsorship will benefit the Oakland A's Community Fund, which takes an innovative and dynamic approach to promote education, support youth sports, and provide economic opportunity in order to help make Oakland and the East Bay a more equitable and inclusive community.
"Stomper in the Town is the perfect way to highlight the creativity of our community while celebrating our 50 years in Oakland. We're excited for our fans to explore Oakland as they search for all 50 statutes.," said Catherine Aker, vice president of Communications and Community for the A's.
The team will host multiple activations at statues during the season, including a Stomper in the Town scavenger hunt. Fans are encouraged to use the hashtag #StomperInTheTown when spotting a statue.
