Michael Wacha of the San Diego Padres Named The National League Pitcher of the Month for May; Nathan Eovaldi of the Texas Rangers Named The American League Pitcher of the Month for May
Right-handed pitcher Michael Wacha of the San Diego Padres has been voted the National League
Pitcher of the Month for May, and right-hander Nathan Eovaldi of the Texas Rangers has been named the
American League Pitcher of the Month for May.
Wacha earned his first career Pitcher of the Month Award and became the first Padres winner since his
rotation-mate Yu Darvish in September/October of last season. Eovaldi also picked up his first career Pitcher of the Month Award and is the first Rangers hurler since his rotation-mate Martín Pérez last May. In addition, Eovaldi is the first Rangers right-hander to take home the honor since Rick Helling in September 1998.

• The 31-year-old went 3-0 with a 0.84 ERA in five May starts. In 32.0 innings pitched, he permitted three earned runs on 16 hits with seven walks and 26 strikeouts while holding opposing batters to a .147 batting average.
• The 2015 NL All-Star led the Majors in ERA, WHIP (0.72), opposing batting average and opposing OPS (.405) for the month.
• The 11-year veteran opened his award-winning month with 6.0 scoreless innings in a no-decision against the visiting Cincinnati Reds at Petco Park on May 2nd, holding the Reds to two hits and two walks with three strikeouts.
• The 2013 NLCS MVP picked up the victory in three consecutive starts on May 9th at Minnesota, May 15th vs. Kansas City and May 21st vs. Boston.
• Wacha compiled 15.0 consecutive scoreless innings pitched after firing 7.0 scoreless innings of one-hit ball with a career-high 11 strikeouts in the start against Kansas City and hurling 6.0 scoreless frames against Boston.
• The Texas A&M University product took a no-hitter into the eighth inning of his start against the Royals before surrendering a leadoff single in the eighth to Michael Massey.
• Enters play today with a 5-1 record on the season and a 3.45 ERA across 10 starts. Among all pitchers
who have made at least 30 starts since the beginning of 2022, Wacha’s .842 winning percentage (16-3)
is second-best in the Majors, trailing only Tony Gonsolin (.905, 19-2) of the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Nathan Eovaldi, Texas Rangers
• The 33-year-old went 4-0 with a 0.96 ERA and one complete game across five starts in May. In 37.2 innings pitched, Eovaldi allowed four earned runs on 23 hits with nine walks and 31 strikeouts while holding opposing batters to a .178 batting average.
• During the month of May, Eovaldi led AL pitchers in ERA and innings pitched; tied for first in wins; ranked fifth in WHIP (0.85); and was sixth in opposing batting average.
• The Texas native tossed 8.0 scoreless innings, permitting five hits and two walks with five strikeouts in his first start of the month in a 10-1 victory over the Los Angeles Angels in Anaheim. Eovaldi followed that performance with 8.2 scoreless frames of three-hit ball with one walk and 12 strikeouts at Oakland on May 11th.
• With the start at Oakland, Eovaldi extended his career-best scoreless innings streak to 28.2, which would eventually end in his next start vs. Atlanta after 29.2 consecutive scoreless frames. It marked the longest
scoreless streak in the Majors this season, and the seventh-longest in Rangers history.
• The 2021 AL All-Star tossed his second complete game of the season on May 23rd at Pittsburgh, holding
the Pirates to one run on six hits with a walk and five strikeouts in the 104-pitch outing. With the performance, he became the first Texas starter with multiple complete games in the team’s first 48
contests of a season since Pérez had two shutouts in the first 20 games of the 2014 season.
• Closed out his award-winning month with his third scoreless start of May, yielding just four hits and three
walks with four strikeouts in a 5-0 win at Detroit on May 29th.
