Mariners select catcher/infielder Austin Nola from Triple-A Tacoma

Nola added to active roster after Edwin Encarnacion trade with Yankees

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto announced today that the club has selected catcher/infielder Austin Nola from AAA Tacoma. Nola has been added to the Mariners, 25-man, active roster after Edwin Encarnación was traded to the New York Yankees yesterday.

Nola (#23) will be in uniform and available for today’s (1:07 pm PT) game against the Athletics at the Oakland Coliseum. The Mariners Major League, 40-man, roster is full at 40 players.

Nola, 29, will be making his Major League debut with his first appearance. He is batting .327 (64x196) with 36 runs, 15 doubles, 1 triple, 7 home runs, 37 RBI, 29 walks, a .415 on-base percentage and a .520 slugging percentage (.935 OPS) in 55 games with AAA Tacoma this season. The 6-foot, 205-pounder has appeared defensively this season at catcher (28 games, 27 starts), first base (24 G, 23 GS) and third base (3 G, 2 GS) with the Rainiers. He has hit safely in 39 of his first 54 games with at-bat, including 19 multi-hit games. He has hit safely in 6 of his last 7 games since June 7, batting .296 (8x27) with 3 runs, 1 double, 1 home run, 2 RBI and 3 walks.

Nola was signed by the Mariners as a free agent on Nov. 8, 2018, after spending the first 7 seasons of his professional career in the Marlins organization. In 8 minor league seasons with Miami (2012-18) and Seattle (2019-c), he is batting .252 (669x2654) with 297 runs, 142 doubles, 12 triples, 22 home runs, 299 RBI, 326 walks and a .340 on-base percentage in 773 games. He was selected by the Marlins in the 5th round of the 2012 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of LSU. He was twice previously selected in the MLB Draft but did not sign: 2008 by Colorado (48th round) and 2011 by Toronto (31st round).
