Giants claim RHP Merandy Gonzalez off waivers from Miami
SCOTTSDALE, AZ -- The San Francisco Giants announced today that they have claimed right-handed pitcher Merandy Gonzalez off waivers from the Miami Marlins.
Gonzalez appeared in eight games for Miami in 2018, going 2-1 with a 5.73 ERA (14er, 22.0ip) across his seven relief appearances and one start. He made his Major League debut on April 19 at Milwaukee and earned his first Major League win on April 25 at Los Angeles-NL.
The 6-0, 216-pound right-hander opened the 2018 season with double-A Jacksonville and ended up making 14 total starts for the Jumbo Shrimp, going 3-6 with a 4.32 ERA.
The 23-year-old was originally signed by the New York Mets as a non-drafted free agent on March 6, 2013. In 91 career minor league games (72 starts), Gonzalez is 33-20 with a 2.79 ERA (137er, 442.2ip), two saves, 363 strikeouts and a .230 batting average against.
With today’s roster move, the Giants 40-man roster currently stands at 40.
