Gary Denbo Named Marlins Vice President, Scouting & Player Development

Denbo joins the Marlins after spending the past eight seasons with the New York Yankees, the last three as Vice President, Player Development. A former minor league player, he has accumulated 31 years of experience in various coaching, scouting and front office capacities, including two stints as Major League hitting coach.
Denbo had three separate stints with the Yankees organization, totaling 23 years, with his most recent stretch starting in 2009 as a player development consultant before working as a pro scout from 2010-14. His first stint with the Yankees was from 1990-2001, which included two seasons a minor league manager (1990, 1993) and one year as their Major League hitting coach (2001). After spending 2002 as a scout for Cleveland and three seasons (2003-05) as a hitting coach for the Nippon Ham Fighters in Japan, he returned to the Yankees from 2006-07 as a roving hitting coordinator, before becoming the Toronto Blue Jays Major League hitting coach in 2008.
A Princeton, Ind. native, Denbo was the Reds' 17th-round selection in the 1983 Draft. Following a four-year minor league playing career as an infielder in the Cincinnati system, he joined the Reds' organization as a minor league coach, then manager, for three seasons. As a minor league manager over parts of four seasons, Denbo posted a 213-194 (.523) mark, leading Single-A Greensboro to the South Atlantic League Championship in 1993.
He and his wife, Penny, have two children - a son, Andy, and a daughter, Emily.
