The Chicago Cubs recalled right-handed pitcher Duane Underwood Jr. from Triple-A Iowa and placed right-handed pitcher Tyler Chatwood on the Paternity List on Monday.
Underwood, who will wear number 51, will make his major league debut as the starting pitcher Monday as the Cubs begin a four-game series at Dodger Stadium. The 23-year-old has gone 3-7 with a 4.27 ERA (34 ER/71.2 IP) in 14 games, all but one as a starter, with Triple-A Iowa this season, his first at the Triple-A level. He has allowed just three homers in 71.2 innings pitched and has limited opponents to a .352 slugging percentage.
A second round selection of the Cubs in the 2012 Draft, Underwood was selected to the 40-man roster in November of 2016. In seven minor league seasons, he has gone 31-32 with a 3.79 ERA (221 ER/524.2 IP) and one complete game in 114 games, including 108 starts. He set career marks in 2017 with 13 wins, 98 strikeouts and 138.0 innings pitched with Double-A Tennessee.
The six-foot, two-inch righty is set to become the first Cub to make his major league debut as a starting pitcher since Jen-Ho Tseng, September 14, 2017 vs. the Mets, and the first pitcher to do so on the road since Kyle Hendricks, July 10, 2014 at Cincinnati.
Chatwood, 28, has gone 3-5 with a 3.95 ERA (30 ER/68.1 IP) in 14 starts for Chicago this season.
