Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Christian Yelich has been named the National League Player of the Week presented by W.B. Mason for the period ending September 2nd. The announcement was made earlier today on MLB Network.
Yelich posted a slash line of .444/.516/1.000 with seven runs scored, 12 hits, a double, a triple, four home runs, 14 RBI and two stolen bases over six games played to claim his second career NL Player of the Week Award, and second of the 2018 campaign (also July 29th). Among his NL counterparts, Yelich finished the period first in home runs, RBI, extra-base hits (6), slugging percentage and total bases (27); tied for first in hits and runs scored; tied for second in stolen bases; fifth in batting average; and sixth in on-base percentage. This is Milwaukee's second Player of the Week award this season, following Christian's honor earlier this season.
On Wednesday night against the Cincinnati Reds, Yelich batted a perfect 6-for-6 while completing the second cycle of the 2018 season, joining fellow All-Star Mookie Betts of the Boston Red Sox (August 9th). According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the performance was the 321st cycle and the 78th 6-for-6 game since 1900. Since 1908, the 2018 All-Star became just the fourth player in Baseball to hit for the cycle while tallying six hits, joining Ian Kinsler (April 15, 2009), Rondell White (June 11, 1995) and Bobby Veach (September 17, 1920). In addition, the NL MVP candidate helped his team win on the defensive side by throwing a runner out at home, becoming the first player to do so and hit for the cycle in the same game since Johnny Callison of the Philadelphia Phillies on June 27, 1963. On Sunday, the 26-year-old outfielder finished his productive week by delivering the first grand slam of his career, and his 27th round-tripper of the season, to help lead Milwaukee to a 9-4 victory over the Washington Nationals. Since the All-Star break, Yelich, who was acquired from the Miami Marlins this past offseason, has registered 16 home runs and 40 RBI. Entering play today, the California native is the only player in the NL, and one of three players in the Majors, to be batting .315-or-better with 28 doubles and 27 home runs thus far in 2018, joined by fellow All-Stars Mookie Betts and J.D. Martinez of the Boston Red Sox.
Other noteworthy performances last week included All-Stars Javier Báez (.357, 6 R, 10 H, 4 XBH) and Anthony Rizzo (.407, 7 R, 2 2B, 2 HR) of the Chicago Cubs; All-Star second baseman Scooter Gennett (.500, 5 R, 12 H, 6 RBI) of the Cincinnati Reds; outfielder Hunter Renfroe (.333, 5 R, 3 HR, 8 RBI) of the San Diego Padres; starting pitcher Noah Syndergaard (1-0, 3.00 ERA, 15.0 IP, 17 SO) of the New York Mets; and rookie outfielder Juan Soto (.478, 11 H, 3 XBH, 6 RBI) of the Nationals.
