Cal Raleigh Announced as Rawlings Gold Glove Finalist

October 20th, 2022

SEATTLE, Wash. -- Seattle Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh has been selected as a finalist for the 2022 Rawlings® American League Gold Glove Award at catcher, as announced today by the Rawlings Sporting Goods Company and Major League Baseball.

Raleigh is one of three finalists for the American League Gold Glove at catcher with Sean Murphy (Oakland) and Jose Trevino (New York).

If Raleigh wins the award, he will become the first catcher in Mariners history to win a Gold Glove and the first Mariners player to win the award since Evan White (1B) and J.P. Crawford (SS) in 2020.

“It’s an honor to be named a finalist for the Rawlings Gold Glove Award,” Raleigh said. “I want to thank my family, coaches and teammates for all of their support and help throughout the season. Without them, none of this would be possible. Go M’s!”

Raleigh led American League catchers with 25 caught stealing this season (2nd in MLB), ranking ahead of Tucker Barnhart (20), Christian Vázquez (19) and Sean Murphy (19) in the AL, while trailing only J.T. Realmuto (30) for the MLB lead. Raleigh also ranked tied for 3rd among American League catchers (4th in MLB) with 9 Catcher Framing Runs Saved according to Baseball Savant, ranking behind only Jose Trevino (16) and Jonah Heim (12) in the AL.

According to FanGraphs’ Defensive Runs Saved metric, Raleigh was the 3rd-most-valuable defensive catcher in the Majors with a mark of 14 runs saved, ranking behind only Jose Trevino (21) and Adley Rutschman (18). The 6-foot-3, 235-pound backstop allowed only 3 passed balls in 917.0 innings behind the plate, tied for 2nd-fewest in the American League among catchers with at least 900.0 innings defensively.

Raleigh recorded the first 20-home-run, 20-caught-stealing season in Mariners club history, hitting 27 homers and throwing out 25 would be base stealers. He was only 1 of 2 catchers in the Majors to reach the milestone, joining J.T. Realmuto (22 HR, 30 CS).

Raleigh managed the Mariners pitching staff to a 3.30 ERA while behind the plate, 5th-lowest catcher ERA in the Majors.

The Rawlings® Gold Glove Awards will be announced on Tuesday, November 1 on ESPN, prior to Game 4 of the World Series.

The Rawlings® Gold Glove Award is presented annually to 18 players, one for each position, in both the American and National Leagues. The Gold Glove has honored the best defenders at each portion in each league since it was first given out in 1957. Major League managers and coaches vote within their league, accounting for 75 percent of the selection process. The other 25 percent is conducted by the sabermetrics community.
