A group headed by Florida businessman Bruce Sherman and 14-time MLB All-Star Derek Jeter has completed its purchase of the Miami Marlins, with Sherman, the club's Chairman and Principle Owner, becoming the fourth owner in franchise history and Jeter named the team's Chief Executive Officer. The purchase agreement was unanimously approved by Major League Baseball's owners on September 27.

Sherman, Chairman and CEO of M4 Capital, relocated to South Florida in 1979. He has two daughters and is married to Cynthia. The couple started the Bruce and Cynthia Sherman Charitable Foundation, which supports a variety of charitable and philanthropic causes, including childhood development, advanced medical research and education, and the performing and visual arts. The Bruce and Cynthia Sherman Charitable Foundation is the sole funder of the Sherman Prize. Bruce graduated from the University of Rhode Island in 1969 and earned a Master's in Business Administration from Bernard Baruch College in 1973.

Jeter retired in 2014 following a 20-year Major League Baseball career, all with the New York Yankees, with five World Series Championships. He was the longest-tenured captain in Yankees history and is the only player to garner All-Star Game and World Series Most Valuable Player Awards in the same season (2000). Jeter established the Turn 2 Foundation in 1996 to promote healthy lifestyles among youth and is the Founding Publisher of The Players' Tribune. Jeter and his wife, Hannah, welcomed their first child, a daughter, in August.

The Marlins, who won World Series Championships in 1997 and 2003, were established as the Florida Marlins in 1992 and began play in 1993 under Wayne Huizenga, who owned the team through the 1998 season. John Henry owned the Marlins from 1999-2001, before Jeffrey Loria purchased the club prior to the 2002 season. The organization was renamed the Miami Marlins for the 2012 season, the same year they moved into Marlins Park, which hosted the 2017 MLB All-Star Game.
