The Milwaukee Brewers have announced the promotions of three front office executives in the baseball operations department - Karl Mueller to vice president of player personnel, Matt Kleine to director of baseball operations, and Scott Campbell to special assignment scout.
"Karl, Matt and Scott are important members of our baseball operations structure and we value their significant contributions to the organization," said General Manager David Stearns. "Each has a unique skill set that impacts many of the baseball decisions that are made year-round."
Mueller, who is entering his 15th season in the organization, joined the Brewers as a baseball operations assistant in January of 2004. He previously held positions as coordinator/manager of advance scouting and baseball research (2005-10), director of video scouting and baseball research (2011-15) and director of baseball operations (2016-17).
Mueller assists Stearns and Assistant General Manager Matt Arnold with potential player acquisitions, roster composition, contract negotiations and budget management. In addition, he assists in overseeing the team's video scouting operation, research and development department and hiring efforts. Prior to joining the Brewers, Mueller spent the 2003 season as a baseball operations intern with the Cincinnati Reds.
A native of Lawrenceburg, Indiana, Mueller graduated from Purdue University in 2002 with a degree in business management and minors in finance and management information systems. He obtained his master's degree in sport administration from Xavier University the following year. Karl and his wife, Emily, reside in Waukesha, Wisconsin, with their three children, Mia, Johnny and Charlotte.
Kleine is entering his 12th season with the Brewers. He joined the organization as an associate scout in 2007 and most recently served as manager of baseball operations. Prior to joining the Brewers, he worked with the Houston Astros and Baseball Prospectus.
Kleine provides player valuation analysis and ensures the Club's procedural compliance with Major League Baseball rules. Additionally, he supervises the organization's network of international development scouts, handles the Club's salary arbitration and assists on player contracts and payroll forecasting.
Kleine earned his Juris Doctorate from Marquette University Law School and his certification in Sports Law from the National Sports Law Institute while at Marquette. He graduated cum laude from DePauw University, where he was a four-year letter-winner and captain of the 2008 baseball team that holds the school record for wins and winning percentage. An all-conference outfielder, he graduated as the school's all-time leader in RBI. Matt and his wife, Samantha, reside in St. Francis, Wisconsin.
Campbell, now in his 13th season in the organization, began working with the Brewers as a baseball operations advance scouting intern (2005-06) and held positions as advance scouting assistant (2008) and pro scout (2009), where he covered the Midwest League and Appalachian League. He served as coordinator/manager of advance scouting and baseball research (2010-14) and spent the past three seasons as assistant director of video scouting (2015-17).
Campbell's responsibilities include evaluating professional, draft-eligible and international players, as well as players across the entire organization. He is responsible for development of the Club's video scouting and research efforts, and helps oversee advance scouting and manage video operations. He also assists the baseball operations department with analysis for potential player transactions, technology research and entry-level recruiting.
Originally from Denver, Colorado, Campbell pitched at Monterey Peninsula College and the University of Wisconsin-Parkside, where he graduated in 2005 with a degree in sport and fitness management. He resides in West Allis, Wisconsin, with his daughter, Ellie.
Additionally, the Brewers announced four promotions within the pro scouting department - Marv Thompson (senior advisor - scouting), Ben McDonough (pro scouting crosschecker), Ryan Thompson (pro scouting crosschecker) and Derek Watson (pro scouting crosschecker). Watson, Marv Thompson and Ryan Thompson had previously worked as professional scouts, while McDonough had served as senior coordinator of pro scouting operations.
