Thomas Jones Goodwin
Thomas Jones (Tom) Goodwin was named the Mets first base coach on October 29, 2011...Also responsible for the club's outfielders and handles baserunning instruction for the team. Was a member of the Boston Red Sox organization from 2008-2011, the last three as the organization's Minor League Outfield and Baserunning Coordinator. In 2008, he coached Lowell (A) of the New York-Penn League, helping the Spinners to a 40-33 record and a first-place finish. Also managed the Lewisville Lizards of the Independent Continental Baseball League in 2007. Played 14 major league seasons with the Dodgers (1991-1993, 2000-2001), Royals (1994-1997), Rangers (1997-1999), Rockies (2000), Giants (2002) and Cubs (2003-2004). Was a lifetime .268 hitter with 24 home runs, 284 RBI and 369 stolen bases. Recorded 50 or more stolen bases in four different seasons, with a career-high 66 with Kansas City in 1996. From 1995-2000, he never ranked lower than seventh in the American League in steals, including three second-place finishes and two third-place finishes. During his career, he put together 62 multiple-steal contests, including a four-steal game on June 7, 2000 at Seattle. Stole home three times. In his major league career, he was successful in 369 of 487 (76 percent) stolen base attempts. Committed only 22 errors, recording a .991 fielding percentage (2,402 total chances). Went to the postseason four times, including his first career World Series appearance in 2002 with the Giants. Is a 1986 graduate of Central High School in Fresno, CA where he played baseball, football and basketball. Was originally selected by the Dodgers out of Fresno State in the first round (22nd overall pick) of the 1989 Amateur Draft. At Fresno State, he was a two-time All-America selection...Also was named to The Sporting News' College AllAmerica team in 1989. Was a member of the 1988 Gold Medal winning USA Olympic baseball team. Selected by the Pirates in the sixth round of the 1986 Amateur Draft but did not sign.
2004
Goodwin was 10-for-51 with one RBI off the bench. He made seven starts in center field, three in left and one in right. Goodwin also had a trio of multi-hit games: May 20 vs. San Francisco, May 31 at Los Angeles, and Aug. 19 at Milwaukee. He was on the DL from May 24-June 11 with a strained right groin.
2003
Tom saw action in 87 games in his first season with the Cubs, batting .287 with 1 homer, 12 RBI and 19 stolen bases.
was the Cubs' top pinch hitter, going 10-for-29 (.345) with 3 doubles and 4 RBI.
action in 27 games in centerfield (18 starts), 17 games in leftfield (6 starts) and 15 games in rightfield (8 starts.
from June 1 through the end of the season (56 games), he batted .339 (40-118).
went 19-for-24 in his stolen base attempts, increasing his career steals total to 364 ...had a trio of 2-steal affairs (most recently July 9 vs. Florida), giving him 62 multi-steal games for his big league career.
on May 22 at Pittsburgh, he went 3-for-5 with his first homer as a Cub - a game-winning, 9th-inning solo shot off Scott Sauerbeck in a 3-2 victory ...it was his fourth career homer off a left-handed pitcher.
had his second career 5-hit game July 21 at Atlanta, going 5-for-6 with 4 runs scored.
was on the disabled list July 23-August 18 with a strained left hamstring ...suffered the injury running the bases July 22 in Atlanta
recorded his 1,000th career hit August 20 at Houston - a single off southpaw Mike Gallo.
his 2-run 7th-inning pinch-hit single September 12 off Cincinnati's John Riedling gave the Cubs a 7-6 victory.
2002
Tom played in 78 regular-season games for San Francisco and batted .260 with 1 homer, 17 RBI and 16 steals ... was utilized mostly as an extra outfielder, pinch hitter and pinch runner.
committed 1 error in 53 outfield appearances -- seeing action in 28 games in leftfield (11 starts), 22 games in centerfield (13 starts) and 7 games in rightfield (7 starts).
had a club-high 7 pinch hits, going 7-for-18 with 4 RBI.
among his pinch hits was a key 2-run 7th-inning double September 28 in the Giants' Wild Card-clinching 5-2 victory over Houston.
hit his only homer of the campaign July 21 -- a 2-run 9th-inning shot off Los Angeles' Giovanni Carrara to give the Giants a 6-4 win.
went to the postseason for the third time -- seeing action in 9 playoff games ... made his first career trip to the World Series, appearing in 5 Fall Classic games against Anaheim.
signed with the Giants' organization in April after being released by Los Angeles at the end of spring training ... had two stints with San Francisco's Fresno (AAA) club, appearing in 17 games.
2001
Tom hit .231 in 105 games for Los Angeles ... appeared in 70 games in centerfield (69 starts) and 8 games in leftfield.

Was hampered by injuries in his final season with Texas, hitting .259 in 109 games with 39 stolen bases ... his steals total ranked 3rd in the American League.
was on the disabled list June 12-June 27 with a strained left hip flexor ... after returning to the active list, though, he played in just 1 game before re-injuring the hip and was out of action until August 6.
hit his first career game-opening homer May 7 at Toronto (off Pat Hentgen).
