Stephen John (Steve) Schmoll graduated from Magruder High School in Rockville, Md. in 1998 where he played baseball and basketball...Was inducted into the Magruder High School Hall of Fame in 2006...Pitched four seasons at the University of Maryland...As a senior in 2003, he tied for the Atlantic Coast Conference lead with 124 strikeouts in 88.0 innings and ranked fourth in the nation with an average of 12.7 strikeouts per nine innings...Was named the school's Male Athlete of the Year at Maryland for the year 2002-2003...During the 2002-2003 off-season, Steve worked at the National Institute of Health in Maryland, participating in anti-HIV research.
2006
Spent the season with Norfolk (AAA) of the International League...Made his last appearance of the year, Aug. 18 vs. Louisville...Was placed on the Disabled List on Aug. 24, with a right hamstring strain...Was transferred to the 60-Day Disabled List on Sept. 5...Posted a 2-1 record and a 2.03 ERA in 10 games in May...In 13.1 innings, he allowed six hits, three runs, earned, with four walks and 15 strikeouts...Righthanded batters compiled a .228 (31-136) batting average against him...In nine June games, Steve was 0-0 with a 1.38 ERA (two earned runs/13.1 innings)...Was 4-1 with a 3.18 ERA in 21 home games...In 28.1 innings, he gave up 24 hits, with 12 runs, 10 earned, nine walks and 22 strikeouts...Pitched a season-high 2.1 innings on three different occasions: April 30 vs. Rochester; May 19 vs. Toledo; and June 5 vs. Syracuse...Also pitched 2.0 innings in 10 other contests.
2005
Made the Dodgers' Opening Day roster...Appeared in 16 games before he was optioned to Las Vegas (AAA) of the Pacific Coast League on May 14th...Recalled by Los Angeles on July 14th and was with the club the remainder of the year...Was second among National League rookies in saves and ranked 10th in games pitched...Between the major and minor leagues, he pitched in 70 games (73.0 innings)...Retired all three batters he faced in his major league debut on April 6th at San Francisco...Despite permitting three runs in 1.0 inning on April 8th at Arizona, he picked up his first big league victory when the Dodgers rallied for four runs in the ninth inning for an 8-7 triumph...Over eight appearances from April 9th-April 27th, he pitched 9.0 scoreless innings with one walk and three strikeouts...Gained his first major league save on April 9th at Arizona...Induced Craig Counsell to hit into a game-ending double play in a 12-10, 11-inning victory...Worked 5.0 scoreless innings in his first six appearances after rejoining the Dodgers, from July 14th-July 25th...Hurled 2.0 scoreless innings with three strikeouts to earn a 5-4 victory on July 16th vs. San Francisco...Completed a combined 4-0, one-hitter with Derek Lowe by pitching a perfect ninth inning on July 25th at Cincinnati...Recorded saves in back-to-back appearances, August 5th and August 7th at Pittsburgh...In his final eight outings, he pitched 8.1 scoreless innings, permitting three hits with five walks and six strikeouts...Did not allow an earned run in his last eight minor league outings, from June 23rd-July 9th with Las Vegas, a period of 11.2 innings (17 strikeouts)...Recorded saves in each of his last four games in the minors, June 23rd-July 9th...In four spring training games, hurled 4.0 scoreless innings with three hits, no walks and five strikeouts.
2004
Spent the majority of the year with Vero Beach (A) of the Florida State League...Promoted to Jacksonville (AA) of the Southern League for the final month of the season...In his first six games at Double-A, he went 11.1 innings without yielding an earned run.
2003
Led all Dodger short-season minor leaguers in saves and games pitched...Was the Pioneer League Pitcher of the Week, July 7th-July 13th, when he picked up two saves and worked 6.0 scoreless innings in three games...Averaged 13.0 strikeouts per nine innings (53 strikeouts/36.2 innings).
