Full name: Roberto Manuel Hernandez...Wife's name is Ivonne... Has four children; daughters Kairy (6/3/92) and Jaleissy (4/17/90) and sons Roberto (5/8/94) and Jose (12/1/99)...Attended New Hampton (NH) High School and the University of South Carolina-Aiken, where he played baseball and went 10-2 as a senior...Their refurbished ballpark was named after Hernandez in 1993...Grew up in Manhattan and attended Chelsea Vocational School for three years where he played baseball... Served as the 2002 "Project Warmth" co-chairperson with Trent Green of the Kansas City Chiefs...Supports the Puerto Rico All-Stars Fund, which supports youth-related educational and character-building programs... Joined several of his teammates at the 'Gloves for Kids' event in 2002, which benefited children involved with the RBI (Reviving Baseball in the Inner Cities) program...Organized an autograph show to benefit the hurricane disaster relief fund for Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic in the winter of 1998...Was nominated for the Florida Sports Awards Hometown Hero Award in 1998...Honored as a "Good Guy in Sports" by *The Sporting News* from 2000-2002 for his civic dedication and community service.

Began season with Vancouver, but underwent potentially life-threatening surgery to transfer veins from his inner thigh to his right forearm on 6/4 (the condition was diagnosed as blood clots after he experienced numbness in his right hand while pitching for Vancouver)...Made one rehab appearance for the Gulf Coast League White Sox (R) before joining Birmingham (AA)...Was recalled by Chicago on 8/31...Made major league debut 9/2 as a starter against Kansas City; pitched no-hit ball for 6.0 innings before allowing a leadoff double to Bill Pecota in the 7th...Gave up just one run on one hit over 7.0 innings to earn first big-league victory (the outing remains the longest of his major league career)...Made three straight starts (11.1ip/10r/8er) before making last six outings in relief (3.2ip/5er)...Made last start on 9/12 @California.

Began season with Birmingham, but was promoted to Triple-A Vancouver on 7/8...Went 11-10 with four complete games and a 3.31 ERA in 28 starts between the two clubs.

Began season with Palm Springs (Angels' A) and made seven starts before being promoted to Midland (AA)...Was traded to the White Sox on 8/3 and assigned to South Bend (A) of the Midwest League...Went 4-12 with a 5.50 ERA (131.0ip/80er) in 23 combined starts with the three teams.
