Henricus VandenHurk...Came to United States as catcher at age 16, and signed with Marlins as a pitcher in November 2002...His father, Wim, runs a baseball academy in the Netherlands...Is fluent in four languages (Dutch, English, Spanish and German).
2012
Was unconditionally released by Baltimore on 2/3 and signed by Toronto on 2/22...Was claimed off waivers by Cleveland on 3/21, but designated for assignment on 3/29...Elected free agency on 4/6 and signed a minor league deal with Pittsburgh on 4/9...Made first appearance with Class-A Bradenton, where he won his lone start on 5/7 at Tampa...Was assigned to Triple-A Indianapolis on 5/14 and went on to lead the Pittsburgh minor league system with 14 wins; tied for second in the International League with 13...Ranked fifth in the league in ERA and 10th in strikeouts...Was named Indy's Most Valuable Player...Pitched 5.0 scoreless innings of relief and was victorious in his first game with Indianapolis on 5/14 vs. Norfolk...Went 3-0 with a 0.46 ERA in his first four Triple- A games (two starts), giving up just one run in his first 19.2 innings of work...Made final relief appearance on 5/26 at Louisville (3.2ip/0r)...Won each of his first eight decisions thru 7/3...Suffered first loss in his 11th game on 7/8 at Columbus...Won back-to-back starts on 7/30 and 8/5 and was named International League Pitcher-of-the-Week for the week ending 8/6...Pitched a season-high 8.0 innings in a no-decision on 8/16 at Rochester...Was charged with just three earned runs in his last four starts (26.1ip - 1.03 ERA), to lower his regular season ERA from 3.43 to 2.92...Suffered 8-1 loss in Game One of the Best-of-Five opening playoff round vs. Charlotte on 9/5 (5.1ip/9h/6r/6er/3bb/7so)...Was selected by Pittsburgh on 9/10 and suffered loss that night in Cincinnati, giving up walkoff hit in 14th inning...Entered game at Wrigley Field on 9/16 with a 9-5 lead in the 6th inning and was charged with three runs without retiring a batter...Tossed a scoreless inning on 9/18 vs. Milwaukee and finished season with a scoreless frame vs. Atlanta on 10/3.

Went 4-6 with 6.83 ERA in 18 games (17 starts) during rookie season with Marlins ... was 4-6 with 6.81 ERA in 17 starts, and 0-0 with 7.71 ERA in one relief outing (2.1 innings) ... Made Major League debut April 10 vs. Milwaukee, allowing one earned run in 4.2 innings (5 H, 3 BB, 5 SO) ... he retired two batters in the top of the fifth inning in that game when a rain delay interrupted play for 49 minutes, and he did not return to the mound when the game resumed ... became just the fifth player born in the Netherlands to play in a Major League game during the modern era (1900-2007) ... he also became just the second pitcher from Holland to start a game in the Majors, joining RHP Bert Blyleven, who went 287-250 in 692 games (685 starts) from 1970-92 ...the other Dutch players were RHP Win Remmerswaal (1979-1980), CF Rikkert Faneyte (1993-1996), 2B Robert Eenhoorn (1994-1997) ...
