Made smooth transition into the starting 2nd base position after Ryne Sandberg retired June 13, finishing the year with .285 average...committed only 2 errors in 50 games at 2nd base (47 starts)...also appeared in 30 games at shortstop (17 starts) and 17 games at 3rd base (8 starts)...had only played in five Major League games at 2nd base prior to campaign and had never played 3rd prior to season...went 4-for-5 with a double and 2 runs scored in his 1st official game as the Cubs starting 2nd baseman on June 14 at San Diego.

1993

Appeared in 105 games, including 82 starts at shortstop, hitting .282 with 28 RBI...made 15 errors in 489 total chances for a .969 fielding percentage...was on the season-opening roster for 1st time in his career and made his 1st Opening Day start at shortstop...had a pair of 4-hit games: April 24 vs. Cincinnati and June 29 at San Diego...missed significant stretches during the 2nd half due to right hip flexor and left knee/hamstring strain.

Opened the season at Iowa and was promoted to Chicago April 26...spent a half-season as Chicago's starting shortstop, batting .251 in 74 games...had .974 fielding percentage in 68 games at shortstop...placed on the disabled list from May 5-21 with chicken pox...notched the 1st 4-hit game of his career on August 7 vs. New York...hit his 1st Major League home run August 29 off San Francisco's Francisco Olivaras...hampered by lower back problems late in the season, appearing in his final game on September 4...an MRI revealed a bulging disc.
