Started out the season as the closer and notched a save at Oakland in his first appearance on opening night on April 2...signed a three-year contract extension through the 2000 campaign (w/club option for 2001) on April 4 and that night at Anaheim he allowed a grand slam to Tim Salmon in the 11th inning, giving Anaheim an 8-6 win as he suffered his first and only blown save of the season...tossed a then career-high 3.0 innings pitched on April 18 vs. Milwaukee and strained the medial collateral ligament in his right knee as he warmed up for his fourth inning of work...was placed on the 15-day DL on May 4 (retroactive to April 25)...made rehabilitation stints in Buffalo and Akron before being activated on May 18...on June 18 vs. Cincinnati strained his right hamstring and was forced to leave the game...placed on the 15-day DL for the second time on June 19 and was activated on July 4...re-aggravated the hamstring injury in his first appearance back on July 11 at Minnesota and was again placed on the 15-day DL for the third time on July 12 and activated on Aug. 1...spent the remainder of the season on the active roster... after his final activation on Aug. 1 he went 2-1 with a 7.36 ERA in 26 games (18 ER/22.0 IP)...tossed a career-high 4.0 innings with a season-high five strikeouts on Aug. 16 vs. Toronto...was not on any of the three playoff rosters.
