"El Duque" Hernandez defected from Cuba with seven others on Dec. 2,1997, and was picked up by the Bahamian Coast Guard three days after landing on the Caribbean Island of Anguilla Cay...Rather than accept a visa to enter the United States, he established residence in Costa Rica and was granted free agency in mid-January...He was the star pitcher of Cuba's national team, going 129-47 before being banned from the sport in October 1996 for

Finished 9-9 with a 5.12 earned run average and one save in his first full season with the White Sox. El Duque made 24 appearances, with 22 of them coming as a starter. Posted a 7-2 record with a 4.88 ERA before the All-Star break and a 2-7 record with a 5.35 ERA after the All-Star Game. Was bothered by shoulder tightness during the season, leading to two trips to the disabled list. Finished 1-3 with a 9.00 ERA over his last four starts. Picked up second career save on Oct. 2 at Cleveland. Opponents hit .275 against Hernandez, with a .464 slugging percentage, and averaged 6.4 strikeouts per nine innings. Opponents were successful on 18 of 20 stolen base attempts while El Duque was on the mound. Picked up win No. 2 on April 19 against Minnesota, allowing 10 hits but throwing six scoreless innings. Pitched one of the more memorable innings in White Sox history, entering in the sixth inning of Game 3 of the Division Series at Fenway Park, and shutting down the Red Sox with the bases loaded, one out and the White Sox protecting a one-run lead. Hernandez retired Jason Varitek, Tony Graffanino and Johnny Damon.
