Played two seasons for San Joaquin Delta College before transferring to Long Beach State. Worked primarily as a reliever as a freshman in 2017 (1.63 ERA in 18 games). Made 16 of his 18 appearances as a starter during his sophomore year, going 10-2 with a 3.41 ERA with a team-best 95.0 innings. In his only season at Long Beach State (2019), he posted a 3.19 ERA as a starter during league play (seven starts) while holding opposing batters to a .224 average.

Selected by Chicago-AL in the MLB portion of the Rule 5 Draft in December 2022 and was returned to SF on March 28. Spent the entire season with Triple-A and posted a 14-0 record with a 3.00 ERA (24er, 72.0ip) over 56 games (two starts). Led the PCL with 14 wins and 56 games pitched. Was named Pitcher of the Year for the Sacramento River Cats...Avila was the first Triple-A wins leader to finish the year undefeated since 2000. Avila bridged the gap between the starting pitcher and the rest of the bullpen with the River Cats. Tossed at least 2.0 innings in 11 contests and pitched more than 1.0 inning 28 times.

Combined to go 4-2 with a 1.14 ERA (7 ER/55.1 IP), 16 saves, 58 strikeouts (9.4 per 9.0 IP) and a 0.98 WHIP over 47 relief appearances with Class High A Eugene and Class AA Richmond in the San Francisco Giants organization... Limited opponents to a .206 (40-194) opponents average … right-handers batted .206/.264/.255 (21-102) mark with just one home run allowed... Did not allow an earned run in 24 straight appearances from 5/6-8/9 (24.2 IP), including a streak of 15 consecutive scoreless outings from 6/14-8/9 (15.0 IP)...Began the season with Eugene, where he posted a 0.95 ERA (3 ER/28.1 IP) with 13 saves in 13 chances … did not allow an earned run in 25 of his 27 appearances with the Emeralds...Was promoted to Richmond on 7/14…his first six outings with the Flying Squirrels were scoreless … threw 3.0 scoreless IP on 8/13 at Portland (five SO) and 8/20 vs. Binghamton and 2.0 scoreless IP with four strikeouts on 8/30 vs. Harrisburg... Made one relief appearance in the Eastern League playoffs, tossing 3.0 scoreless IP with no walks and six strikeouts vs. Erie.
