Michael Burton Wood graduated from Forest Hill Community High School in West Palm Beach, Fla., in 1998...Attended the University of North Florida...came to UNF as an infielder but was converted to a pitcher in 2000 when he went 8-4 with a 2.67 ERA and 2 saves...earned South Atlantic Regional MVP honors that year to help the Ospreys to the NCAA Division II World Series...moved full-time to the bullpen in 2001 and set a school record with 16 saves...Participated in the 2004 Royals Caravan.

2005

Was acquired from the Oakland Athletics along with 3B Mark Teahen in exchange for RHP Octavio Dotel and cash on June 24...Posted a 3-8 record and a 5.94 ERA in 17 starts for the Royals...Posted an 11-3 record and a 2.80 ERA in 15 games for Sacramento (Oakland AAA), allowing 83 hits, 42 runs, 28 earned runs in 90.0 innings...walked just 24 batters and recorded 66 strikeouts...Won 10 of his last 11 decisions with Sacramento after starting the season with a 1-2 mark...allowed just 22 earned runs in 74.2 innings over his fi nal 12 starts for a 2.65 ERA...Named to the Pacifi c Coast League All-Star team, but did not appear...Picked up his 1st Major League win as a starter in his Royals debut on June 29 vs. Baltimore...allowed 3 runs on 7 hits in 6.0 innings in a 4-3 Royals win.

Made his major league debut with the A's in just his third professional season and was 2-1 with a 10.54 ERA in seven games, one start...was the A's 10th round pick in the 2001 June draft and was the first Oakland selection from that draft to play for the A's...was the third Oakland selection from 2001 to reach the majors as Jeremy Bonderman of Detroit (second 1st round pick) and Neal Cotts of the Chicago White Sox (2nd round) reached the majors earlier...Bobby Crosby (first 1st round pick) would later become the fourth pick from that draft to reach the majors...allowed a .387 opponents batting average which broke down to .344 (11 for 32) against left handers and .433 (13 for 30) against right handers...average jumped to .435 (10 for 23) with runners in scoring position...first batters faced were 1 for 5 with a walk in relief and he allowed two of his three inherited runners to score...was selected from Triple-A Sacramento on August 21 and made his debut that night in Boston...relieved Rich Harden in the third inning with two outs, the bases loaded and the A's trailing 6-3 and allowed a two-run single to the first batter he faced, Todd Walker...then set down eight of the next nine batters he faced but ending up allowing three runs on five hits and two walks while striking out three in 3.1 innings...picked up his first major league win on August 23 at Toronto (1.2 ip, 1 h, 2 r, 2 er, 1 bb, 3 so)...entered the game in the fifth inning with the score tied at three but the A's scored six times in the sixth inning...also won his next outing on August 26 against Baltimore, tossing a scoreless 12th inning in the A's 2-1 win...was optioned to Double-A Midland on August 31 but did not report as he was brought back to Oakland on September 2 when rosters expanded...made three more relief appearances and did not allow a home run in his first six outings, all in relief (11.2 ip)...then made his first major league start on September 26 at Seattle and suffered his first major league loss in the A's 9-3 loss...allowed seven runs, six earned, on nine hits, including a home run, in 2.0 innings...began the season at Sacramento and was 9-3 with a 3.05 ERA in 16 starts for the River Cats...yielded just five home runs in 91.1 innings pitched (0.49 per nine innings)...allowed a .257 opponents batting average, including .260 (38 for 146) against left handers and .254 (49 for 193) against right handers...allowed 34 runs for the season and 14 of those came in the fourth inning (14.1 ip, 8.79 ERA)...posted a 1.69 ERA (9 er in 48.0 ip) over the first three innings and a 2.48 ERA (8 er in 29.0 ip) from the fifth inning on...Sacramento was 12-4 in his starting assignments...tossed seven or more innings in six of his 16 starts, allowed two runs or fewer 11 times and walked two batters or fewer 14 times...struck out a season high seven in his first outing on April 4 against Portland and went 2-0 with a 1.69 ERA over his first three starts before he was placed on the disabled list on April 20 with right elbow tendinitis...was activated from the D.L. on June 9 and did not have a decision in his first two starts following his return (8 er in 6.1 ip, 11.37 ERA)...then went 6-2 with a 2.22 ERA (56.2 ip, 49 h, 17 r, 14 er, 14 bb, 36 so, 3 hr) over his next nine starts from June 19 to August 5...including a season high tying three-game winning streak from June 30 to July 10...finished July with a 3-1 record and a 1.99 ERA...allowed a season high six runs in 4.1 innings in a loss on August 11 at Fresno but then pitched 8.0 shutout innings in his final Triple-A outing on August 16 at Tucson.
