Graduated from Midland (TX) High School, where he played baseball, basketball and football... was All-District...lettered twice in baseball and as a senior garnered All-State honors as a center fielder...did not pitch in high school...pitched for the first time at South Western (TX) Community College...also attended Alvin (TX) Community College.
2007
In his Reds debut made at least 60 apps in a season for the 13th time in his Major League career...fell 1g shy of his eighth 70- appearance season...his 69 apps increased his career total to 1,178g, just 74 behind all-time leader Jesse Orosco (1,252g)...on 4/22 vs Phi pitched in his 1,120th career game, passing John Franco into second place alone on the all-time appearances list...from 6/17-7/4 was on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left hamstring suffered while running out a ground ball on 6/16 vs Tex...was his second and final plate appearance of the season... prior to that injury had posted a 4.44era in 35 apps...in 34 apps after he was reinstated from the DL recorded a 7.18era...didn't allow a run until his ninth appearance of the season (4/19 vs Hou)...was his longest scoreless stretch of the year...in his last 8 apps of the season posted a 4.26era.
2006
Combined to finish 7-7, 3.99 with 8 saves in 82 apps for the Nationals and Giants...finished 1 appearance shy of his career high...ranked fifth in the National League in games pitched...stranded 47-59 inherited baserunners (79.7%), fifth-best percentage among all NL relievers...was traded to the Giants on 7/28...finished the season as SF's closer and overall there went 4-2, 3.09 with 8 saves in 26 apps...in his last 13 apps of the season went 2-1, 1.29 and converted 6 saves in 7 chances...over 9 apps from 8/26-9/14 threw 10.0 scoreless innings and converted all 5 save opps...that stretch included 4 straight "perfect" saves from 9/2-9/6 in which he retired every batter...Phi's Tom Gordon was the only other pitcher in the Major Leagues all season to produce 4 consecutive "perfect" saves.
2005
Went 3-3, 4.64 in 59 relief apps for the Yankees, Nationals and Red Sox...began the season with NYY...on 7/1 was designated for assignment after posting a 7.07era in 28 apps...was released 10 days later...on 7/13 was signed by the Nationals...on 9/29 was traded to the Red Sox in time for their season-ending, 3-game series vs NYY...threw a scoreless inning that weekend...made his Nationals debut in a 4-3 loss at Mil on 7/15 and balked in the winning run before he threw a pitch...on 7/20 vs Col became the 10th player in history to pitch in 1,000 games.

His 83 apps were a career high and a Mets single-season record...on 5/7 vs Mil became the 14th pitcher in Major League history to pitch in 900 games...in the eighth inning on 8/3 at Mil struck out Gary Bennett, Scott Podsednik (reached on wild pitch), Trent Durrington and Geoff Jenkins to become only the second Mets pitcher to record 4 strikeouts in a single frame (Derek Wallace, 9/13/96 vs Atl)...from 5/25-6/1 appeared in 7 consecutive games...only 2 other Mets pitchers ever pitched in at least 7 straight contests (Turk Wendell, club-record 9g in 1998 & Jesse Orosco, 7g in 1986)...beginning 8/12 didn't allow a run in 19 of his last 21 apps of the season...on 4/29 at LA recorded an RBI-single off Wilson Alvarez...was his first RBI since 5/10/94 vs Phi while with the Braves.
2003
After 6 seasons with the Yankees signed with the crosstown rival Mets...season was interrupted by a pair of trips to the disabled list because of a left knee injury (5/22-6/5, 6/11-7/11)...on 6/13 had surgery to repair the torn meniscus in his left knee (Dr. Andrew Rokito)...held LH batters to a .206 batting average... converted 5-7 save opps.
2002
His 79 apps were a Yankees single-season record (77g, Jeff Nelson, 1997)...ranked third in the American League in apps (Oak's Billy Koch, 84g; Min's J.C. Romero, 81g)...converted 6-9 save opps... on 7/11 vs Cle pitched in his 800th career game.

Established career bests in victories (9) and innings pitched (80.1)...his 76 apps fell 1 shy of the Yankees' single-season record (77g, Jeff Nelson, 1997)...was named to the American League All-Star team and retired both batters faced in the AL's 4-1 win at Sea...allowed just 1 earned run in his first 19 apps and 24.2ip...in July went 1-0, 0.77...in the eighth inning of World Series Game 4 vs Ari allowed a single to Luis Gonzalez, snapping a streak in which he had retired 22 consecutive batters in the Fall Classic...hadn't allowed a batter to reach base since SD's Carlos Hernandez singled in Game 2 of the 1998 World Series.
2000
Made 69 apps for NYY...in 7 post-season apps went 3-0, 1.04...went 2-0, 0.00 in 4 World Series apps, tying the record for most wins by a relief pitcher in a single Fall Classic (7th time, first since Tor's Duane Ward in 1992)...also became the first relief pitcher ever to win twice in a World Series of fewer than 6 games.
1999
Led the Yankees with 73 apps...on 5/9 vs Sea threw 4.0 shutout innings in his only career start...snapped his streak of 552 consecutive relief apps, the longest in Major League history to begin a career before making a start...the previous record off 443 straight relief apps was held by Gary Lavell, who made his first start on 8/26/81 for SF at StL...did not allow a run in 4 post-season apps.
1998
Led the Yankees with 67 apps and established a career high with 79.0 innings pitched...while Mariano Rivera was on the disabled list from 4/6-4/24 converted all 4 save opps...on 6/15 at Bal was ejected by HP umpire Mark Hirschbeck for hitting Eric Davis with a pitch...was suspended for 5g.
1997
In his first season with the Yankees established career highs with 6 wins, 70 strikeouts and 26 holds... among American League relievers ranked third in holds, fourth in opponents' BA (.205) and ninth in ERA (2.57)...LH batters hit just .161...on 6/1 at Bos recorded a career-high 5 strikeouts (3.1ip).
1996
Combined to finish 4-4, 3.66 with 1 save in a career-high 81 relief apps for the Red Sox and Rangers... was traded from Bos to Tex at the 7/31 deadline...for the Rangers didn't allow a run in 18 of his 22 apps... suffered the 12-inning, 5-4 loss in Game 2 of the American League Division Series at Yankee Stadium.
1995
Combined to finish 2-1, 4.24 with 1 save in 48 relief apps for the Braves and Red Sox...was traded from Atl to Bos at the 7/31 deadline...becme the 24th pitcher used by the Red Sox, a club single-season record.
1994
Led all Braves pitchers with 5 pickoffs...on 5/10 vs Phi didn't allow a run in a career-high 4.0 innings and at the plate went 2-for-2 with an RBI...in July posted a 0.93era in 12 apps.
1993
While pitching for the Braves recorded a career high 27 saves, a new club single-season record for a lefthander...in May converted 10-11 save opps and earned the Rolaids Relief Man of the Month Award...on 5/27 at Cin suffered a blown save, snapping a streak over 2 seasons in which he had converted 18 straight save opps (8/16/92-5/23/93)...the last 3 weeks of the season pitched with a broken right thumb after he was hit by a Derek Bell line drive.
1992
Posted a 7.20era in his first 28 apps and a 2.09era in his last 37 apps...produced his best month in September, when he went 3-0 with 1 save in 13 scoreless apps (16ip)...did now allow a home run in his last 39 apps of the season...made 9 post-season apps...in Game 5 of the World Series vs the Blue Jays threw 5.0 shutout innings to earn the save.
1991
Established a Braves franchise record with 74 apps...ranked third in the National League in games pitched...finished eighth in the NL Rookie of the Year Award voting...on 5/28 at SD earned his first Major League victory...in his last 47 apps of the season beginning 6/18 posted a 2.28era...in Game 5 of the World Series vs the Twins retired all 5 batters faced to notch his first career post-season victory.
1990
Made just 7 apps because of an injury to his left shoulder...on 4/28 went on the disabled list...while on rehab at Greenville experienced more discomfort in the shoulder and didn't pitch again the rest of the season...on 6/12 was transfered to the 60-day DL...the next day had surgery to repair the torn labrum in his left shoulder.
1989
Pitched at Class AA Greenville and Class AAA Richmond before he was promoted to the Braves on 8/24...that night vs StL made his Major League debut and threw a scoreless inning in the 4-1 loss...did not allow a run in his first 8 apps or 9.0 innings...in the 5-2 win at Pit on 8/28 threw 2.0 perfect innings for his first career save...overall coverted 7-8 save opps...while at Greenville established a Southern League record by converting 11 saves in 11 opps...was promoted to Richmond on 7/27 and converted all 8 of his save opps.

Appeared in 30 games (23 starts) at single-A Burlington and made 2 starts at single-A Durham...ranked 4th in Midwest League with 160 strikeouts...led Burlington in wins (11) and innings pitched (154.0).
