Matthew Christopher Whiteside... Is a 1985 graduate of Charleston (MO) High School, where he lettered in baseball, football and basketball... Threw four shutouts his senior year... His basketball team won the state title with a 28-5 mark that same year... Served as celebrity judge for the 1996 Miss USA Pageant... Hobbies include fishing and scuba diving... Signed by Rangers scouts Jim Dreyer and Doug Gassaway... Pitched for Arkansas State University, where he was named the American South Conference Player of the Year in 1990... Graduated in 1991 with a degree in physical education.

Signed with the Atlanta Braves on January 12... Spent the entire season with Richmond (AAA) of the International League... Posted a record of 2-4 with a 3.23 ERA in 57 appearances... Led the Braves' minor league organization in saves (38) and in games (57)... Furthermore, ranked 6th in the organization in WHIP (1.13) and 10th in opponents batting average (.228)... Was the "Pitcher of the Month" for Richmond in May... Compiled a record of 0-1-9 with a 3.60 ERA (6ER/15.0IP) while recording 15 strikeouts and held opponents to a .250 batting average in the month of May... Finished 51 of his 57 games... From May 3-Aug. 31, finished 44 of his 45 games in which he appeared... Converted his first nine saves in as many opportunities to begin the season... Through the first 13 games of the season, owned a record of 2-0 with a 2.20 ERA (4ER/16.1IP) including nine saves... Worked 1.0 innings or more in all but four of his 57 appearances... Worked more than 1.0 inning in 11 of his 38 saves... Had his best month of the season in August when he recorded 12 saves and had an ERA of 2.03 (3ER/13.1IP) while holding opponents to a .184 batting average... Posted a record of 1-2-15 with a 2.76 ERA in 25 games at home... On the road, compiled a record of 1-2-23 with a 3.63 ERA in 32 games.
