Full name is Matthew Phillip Dermody. Selected in the First-Year Player Draft in 2009 (PIT), 2011 (COL), and 2012 (ARI), but did not sign until being drafted by the Blue Jays in 2013. Pitched for four seasons at the University of Iowa (2010-13)...In 2012, won Iowa’s Big Ten Sportsmanship Award...As a senior in 2013, went 7-2 with a 3.64 ERA. Pitched for Hyannis in the Cape Cod Baseball League in 2010 and 2011. Attended Norwalk High School in his hometown of Norwalk, Iowa...Set the school’s single-season records for home runs (13) and RBI (51), as well as the career record for strikeouts as a pitcher (436). Was also a standout football and basketball player in high school...Named to the all-conference academic team in all four years, for all three sports.

2022

Signed with CHC as a minor league free agent on 2/3. Pitched in 20 games (13 starts) for Triple-A Iowa. Named International League Pitcher of the Month for July after appearing in five games (three starts) and going 3-0 with a 0.77 ERA, 0.94 WHIP, and .188 opponent AVG (23.1 IP, 2 R, 16 H, 26 SO, 6 BB). Threw 4.0+ innings and allowed 1 or 0 runs in each of his 5 July outings...On 7/9 at Indianapolis, struck out 10 batters and allowed 2 hits in 5.0 IP. Added to the Cubs’ ML roster on 8/4 as the 27th man for a doubleheader at STL...Did not pitch in either game, then was returned to the Iowa roster that night. Released by the Cubs on 8/9.

2016

Began in Dunedin to open the 2016 season, and made 16 relief appearances with a 1.96 ERA before being promoted to
the Double-A New Hampshire Fisher Cats... Made another 16 relief appearances at New Hampshire, posting a 0.92 ERA, which led to his promotion to the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons...On Sept. 1, 2016, was called up by Toronto...Made his MLB debut on Sept. 3 against the Tampa Bay Rays...In relief of Joe Biagini, he pitched 0.2 IP, faced four batters, gave up two hits with no earned runs and got two outs while striking out one...After the season was assigned to the Mesa Solar Sox of the Arizona Fall League...On Oct. 31, was named an AFL All-Star...Appeared in 10 games for Mesa and pitched to a 5.40 ERA with eight strikeouts.
