Graduated from Irvington (CA) High School, where throughout his prep career he both pitched and played shortstop...as a high school junior went 4-4, 2.17 with 39 strikeouts as a pitcher and hit .407 while playing shortstop...attended California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo and as a sophomore in 2014 was the Big West Conference Field Player of the Year.

Went to spring training camp with the Rangers but during the championship season spent time in the Pirates, Mariners and Giants organizations...Made his 27 Major League apps for the Pirates and Giants...In March was acquired by the Pirates for a player to be named (RHP Ricky DeVito, 3/10)...On 7/2 was claimed off waivers by the Mariners...At the 7/31 trade deadline was acquired by the Giants, with OF A.J. Pollock and cash, for a player to be named or cash...Was signed by the Reds to a Minor League contract and invited to 2024 Major League Spring Training camp, November 29, 2023.
2022
Acquired in an 8/2 trade with Milwaukee involving RHP Matt Bush, Mathias spent the season’s final month-and-a-half with Texas, batting .277/.365/.554/.919 with five HR and 16 RBI over 24 G in his first extended MLB action…recalled on 8/16 and had a pinch double in his TEX debut on 8/17 vs. OAK…hit .370 (17-46) w/ 5 HR/16 RBI over his first 15 G/11 GS through 9/14…in final 9 G/5 GS beg. 9/16, went 1-for-19 w/ 10 SO…whiffed in nine straight PA’s from 9/17-25…1st career multi-HR game on 9/13 vs. OAK, hitting a game-tying 2-R HR in the seventh and his first career walk-off HR in the 9th…became the fifth player in Rangers history to hit game-tying and walk-off HRs in the same game, both in the 7th inning or later (credit Elias)…hit HR in three straight PA’s spanning 9/13-14 vs. OAK, the first Ranger to do so since Rougned Odor (3 from 5/16-17/19) and first RHB Ranger to do it since Adrián Beltré on 8/22/12 vs. BAL (HR in 1st three PA’s)…prior to the trade, batted .118 (2-16) with one HR and four RBI over six G with Milwaukee.
MINORS 2022: Combined to slash .322/.422/.518/.940 (64-199) with nine home runs and 34 RBI over 58 games for Triple-A Nashville (MIL) and Round Rock (TEX)…would have second ranked among Pacific Coast Leaders in both batting average and OPS if he qualified …batted .318 (54-170) with eight doubles, eight HR, and 30 RBI in 50 G spanning three stints with the Sounds (Opening Day- 5/23, 5/31-6/10, 6/24-8/1)…had hits in six of eight G with Round Rock following trade on 8/2, batting .345 (10-29) with one HR and four RBI for the Express prior to recall to Texas on 8/16.
