Juan Manuel Mateo
Played his first season of baseball in 2002 as Luis Eduardo Mateo...was signed by Chicago scout Jose Serra...resides in Bani, Dominican Republic.
2006
Mateo made 10 starts, and appeared in one game in relief. He won his Major League debut Aug. 3, giving up three runs (two earned) on six hits over five innings against Arizona. His longest outing was seven innings Aug. 20 against St. Louis. He was struck on the forearm by a line drive Aug. 31. He also had to leave a start with back spasms on Sept. 15.
2005
Spent the season in the Florida State League with Daytona (A) where he split time between the roles of starter and reliever.
Had a 6-4, 3.39 ERA in 16 starts and was 4-1, two saves with a 3.00 ERA in 16 relief appearances.
Was converted to a starter on 5/25 for the remainder of the season and gradually built up innings to where six of his final eight starts were 6.0 innings or more.
Allowed 11 runs in his final 49.2 IP for a 1.99 ERA and gave up just two runs in his final 17.0 IP (1.06 ERA).
August again proved to be his best month as he had a 3-0 mark and 1.72 ERA in six starts with a .180 opponents batting avg.
Had one shutout on 8/26 at St. Lucie, the second game of a DH. Went 7.0 IP allowed two hits and struck out nine.
Struck out nine batters three times in a game and eight twice. Fanned nine in each of his final two starts.
Led team with 123 strikeouts and tied for 2nd with 10 wins - three shy of FSL leader.
2004
Used mainly in relief, made just one start for Lansing (A)...the start came in the second game of a DH at Burlington went 3.0 IP and allowed two runs...was almost unhittable in May and August allowing just a .143 and .189 batting average against him respecitvely...in 12 games in August was 2-0 with five saves and a 1.25 ERA.
2003
At Mesa (R) his 18 games pitched ranked fifth in the league...all 18 games were in relief...had a 2.5 strikeout-to-walk ratio (35 K/ 14 bb)...in his last eight games pitched in August, went 2-0 with a 1.93 ERA.
2002
Played for the Cubs Dominican team in his first year in pro ball...made four starts and had a 3-0 record, with three saves.
