Smith and his wife, Kelly, have a son, Caysen. Smith pitched at Lipscomb University, where he was named the 2010 Atlantic Sun All-Conference First Team, ranking fourth in the nation with 124 strikeouts. He is a graduate of Grandview Prep Academy in Margate, Florida...Smith has twice led his league in strikeouts for a season: the Midwest League in 2011 with 166 and the Southern League in 2013 with 139.

Split the season between the Mariners' and Red Sox' Triple-A clubs...In 22 appearances (11 starts), was 5-8 with a 4.38 ERA (41 ER/84.1 IP), 90 SO, and only 19 BB. Signed with the Mariners as a minor league free agent on 3/15...Made 4 appearances with Tacoma (0-2, 6.10 ERA) before being released by SEA on 4/24. Signed by BOS on 5/15 and assigned to Pawtucket... Allowed 13 ER in his first 7.1 IP (15.95 ERA), but had a 2.84 ERA (21 ER/66.2 IP) in his remaining 15 games. For the PawSox, surrendered only 1 HR to his 143 right-handed hitters faced. In 8 relief outings for Pawtucket, posted a 2.78 ERA (7 ER/22.2 IP) and .229 opponent AVG (19-for-83, 27 SO). Made his organizational debut on 6/9 vs. Indianapolis. In his final 8 starts with the PawSox (beginning 7/1), posted a 3.06 ERA (16 ER/47.0 IP)...Threw 5.0 innings and allowed 1 or 0 runs in his first 3 starts in that stretch, then threw a quality start in each of his next 5. Threw 5.0 scoreless innings on 7/1 at Scranton/Wilkes- Barre...Allowed 1 hit in 4.0 scoreless innings on 8/12 at Indianapolis. Following the season, made 4 appearances (3 starts) for Hermosillo in the Mexican Pacific Winter League.

Split the season between OAK (26 games) and Triple-A Nashville (19 games) in his A's organization debut. 16 of his 26 ML outings were scoreless. Held opponents scoreless in 8 of 9 outings during his first stint with the Sounds...In those 8 outings, struck out 21 in 13.0 IP while allowing just 3 hits and 2 BB. Had his contract selected on 5/3 and made his A's debut on 5/5 vs. DET...Allowed 1 ER in his first 4 games with OAK from 5/5-20 (8.0 IP). Made 18 appearances before a 7/1 option. Recalled from 7/24-8/16 and allowed just 1 ER in 11.0 IP (0.82 ERA) over 8 games during his 2nd stint with OAK. Earned ML wins in consecutive outings on 7/30 vs. MIN and 8/6 at LAA. Returned to Nashville on 8/16 for the remainder of the season. Outrighted off the 40-man roster on 11/6. Following the season, made 7 starts for Hermosillo in the Mexican Pacific Winter League.
