Made just 4 starts due to right elbow problems, which led to Tommy John ligament replacement surgery on August 29...began the season on Akron's disabled list with tendinitis in his right elbow before going 1-1 with a 5.03 ERA in 4 starts between April 21 and May 7...returned to the disabled list with elbow soreness and eventually underwent reconstructive surgery when rehab did not alleviate the problem.

Went 7-6 with a 4.38 ERA in 17 starts for Double-A Akron...was 3-0 with a 2.16 ERA in April...was on the D.L. twice in May, and did not pitch after July 28 due to lower back problems.

Was invited to major league spring training for the first time in his career...went 5- 9 with a 4.57 ERA and a team-leading 98 strikeouts in 23 starts for Double-A Akron...pitched into the 7th inning in 11 of 23 starts...went 3-0 with a 4.03 ERA through his first 8 starts, then dropped 9 of his last 11 decisions, including his final 5 over his last 8 starts...had a season-high 10 strikeouts June 14 vs. Portland...was on the disabled list from July 9-29 with tendinitis in his right shoulder...was promoted to Buffalo September 1 and picked up the win the next day vs. Rochester, allowing 3 runs in 5.0 innings of relief in his only outing at Triple-A...pitched for Maryvale in the Arizona Fall League, going 0- 4 with a 5.55 ERA in 8 starts.
1998
Pitched most of the year for Single-A Kinston before a late-season promotion to Akron...went 11-9 with a 3.81 ERA in 27 starts for Kinston, leading the club in starts, wins, innings pitched (172.2) and strikeouts (148)...ranked 2nd in the Carolina League in innings pitched, 5th in strikeouts and tied for 4th in starts...his 153 combined strikeouts between Kinston and Akron led all Indians minor leaguers...went 8-6 with a 3.66 ERA in his final 17 starts beginning June 1...tossed a 9.0-inning, 4-hit complete game August 9 at Prince William...was promoted to Akron September 4 and made his only start the next day, earning the win vs. Trenton by limiting the Thunder to an earned run over 7.0 innings.
1997
Signed with Cleveland May 15 as a draft-and-follow, he made his professional debut with short-season Single-A Watertown, going 10-2 with a 3.08 ERA in 13 starts...his 10 wins in just 13 starts led the club, ranked 2nd in the New York-Penn League and tied for 2nd among all Cleveland farmhands.
