A 1990 graduate of Sebring (FL) High School, where he participated in baseball, football and wrestling...In baseball was MVP his junior and senior years...Was the High School Player of the Year in 1990...Recorded 557 strikeouts in his prep career, second-highest total in Florida high school history... Combined to go 1-3-1, 6.94 in 64 appearances, all in relief, for the Yankees and Reds...Was his third career stint with the Reds...Began the season with NY and went 0-1, 8.27 in 24 games before he was traded to the Reds on 6/18...Finished the season 1-2, 6.23 with a save in 40 apps for the Reds...From 8/11-9/3 did not allow a run over 12 consecutive apps (10.1 IP), the longest scoreless stretch by a Reds reliever all season...Retired 32-of-40 (80%) first batters faced and stranded 16-of-19 (84%) inherited runners, the best percentages for any Reds reliever...In the 3-2 victory at ATL on 9/23, recorded his only save of the season, his first since 9/1/00 vs. MIL.

As one of the Reds' most effective pitchers out of the bullpen went 6-1 with a 2.98 in 62 games, all in relief...twice was on the disabled list, from 7/12-7/30 with a broken little toe on his right foot and from 8/29-end of the season with a strained left groin...made his last appearance of the season on 8/28...from 6/21-6/28 did not pitch because of an infection in his left hand that required hospitalization and intravenous antibiotics...with 19 holds ranked eighth among National League leaders...ranked fourth on the club in appearances...LH batters hit just .202...posted a 0.68 ERA on the road...didn't allow a run until 4/21, his 12th appearance of the season (10.2 IP)...only twice all season allowed more than 1 run in any appearance, on 5/12 vs. St. Louis (2.2IP, 2R, 2ER) and 5/23 vs. Florida (1.0+IP, 2R, 1ER)...suffered his only defeat in a 4-2 loss vs. St. Louis on 5/10...won his last five decisions (5/16-8/18), one win shy of his career-high winning streak...did not convert his only save opportunity, on 8/24 at Houston...retired the first batter 47-of-62 times (76%), the best percentage on the staff...stranded 38-of-49 inherited baserunners...on 4/11 at Pittsburgh made his 300th career appearance.

For the Rockies went 1-7 with a 6.25 ERA and tied his career high with 69 appearances...ranked third on the club with eight holds...his 7 losses were a career-high and second-most by any reliever in the National League (LA's Matt Herges, 8 losses)...allowed 18 homers, the most by any reliever in the Major Leagues...posted a 3.99 ERA after the All-Star break...on 4/9 at St. Louis recorded the 300th strikeout of his career...earned his only victory in an 11-8 win vs. Los Angeles on 5/22, then lost his last four decisions...that 4-game losing streak (6/23-8/25) tied his career high...on 6/16 vs. Cincinnati recorded five strikeouts in succession, tying a club record established by Darren Holmes on 6/1/93 vs. Pittsburgh...retired the first batter in 49-of-69 appearances (.710).
2000
Turned in one of the best performances by any reliever in the Major Leagues...established career highs in victories, ERA and strikeouts...after his April trade from the Reds to the Rockies went 11-2 with a 2.17 with 5 saves in 67 appearances...was 10-2 with a 2.80 ERA and two saves in 36 games at Coors Field...his 10 victories at Coors Field and .833 home winning percentage both were franchise records...his 11 victories were a club record for a Rockies reliever and tied LA's Matt Herges for the most by any NL reliever in 2000...with 18 holds tied the club record set by Chuck McElroy in 1998...from 5/13-7/14 had a 14.0-inning scoreless streak at Coors Field...didn't lose a game until his 41st appearance, on 6/17 vs. Oakland...his overall ERA of 2.36 ranked second in the National League behind SF's Robb Nen (1.50)...allowed an average of 8.8 baserunners per 9.0 IP, second-best in the NL behind Nen's 7.9 mark...longest winning streak of the season was a career-high six games (5/1-5/31)...from 5/6-7/9 put together a 29.1-inning scoreless streak (4BB, 32K), a Rockies record and the second-longest in the Majors in 2000 (Atl's Greg Maddux, 39.1IP, 9/2-9/28)...from 4/25-8/21 did not allow a homer in 196 consecutive batters faced, the second-longest streak in franchise history...in May went 6-0, 0.00 and held opponents to a .133 average...in June made 12 scoreless apps (13.2IP)...on 6/10 vs Tex hit his only career homer (off Matt Perisho)...recorded his last save of the season in a 5/3 win vs. Milwaukee on 9/1.
1999
For the Reds went 1-2 with a 4.43 in 50 relief appearances...during the Reds' September battle for a playoff berth did not allow a run in his last four apps of the season (2.1IP) beginning 9/7...in June went 1-0, 1.17 (15.1IP, 18K), including a stretch from 6/7-6/19 in which he retired 22 consecutive batters...on 5/8 vs. Cubs became the second Reds pitcher of the season to allow 3 HR in an inning (Tomko, 4/28 at Phi, 1st inn.) when he allowed solo HR in the seventh to Jose Hernandez, Sammy Sosa and Benito Santiago...Sosa and Santiago homered on consecutive pitches, and Sosa's 453-foot HR was the 26th home run to reach Cinergy Field's Red Seat level and the longest homer at the stadium all year...retired the first batter 37-of-50 times...stranded 14-of-25 inherited baserunners.

Was 5-5 with a 4.01 ERA and nine saves in 69 games (three starts) for Cincinnati...his five-game winning streak from 5/2-8/14 was a career high and the longest by a Reds pitcher all year...with 9 saves ranked second on the club (Jeff Shaw, 24)...went 0-2 with a 7.04 in three starts and 5-3 with a 3.46 in 66 relief appearances...ranked 11th among NL relievers with 83.1 IP...made his first two appearances out of the bullpen, then from 4/8-4/19 made three consecutive starts before finishing the season with 64 consecutive relief appearances...had a 2.88 ERA in his last 26 games of the season...turned in his best stretch of the season from 6/30-7/18, when he did not allow a run in a season-high 10 consecutive games (12.1IP)...during that stretch retired 17 consecutive batters at one point (7/13-7/18)...converted 9-of-13 save opps...in the 6-4 victory on 9/18 retired all 10 batters, tied for the longest relief outing of his career (3.1IP, 6/20/95 for Montreal vs. Houston), and on 9/20 threw 3.0 innings to save the 7-3 win...18 times threw at least 2.0 innings in relief and three times pitched at least 3.0 innings in relief...as a reliever retired the first batter 50-of-66 times...stranded 37-of-52 inherited baserunners...10 times entered games with at least 2 inherited runners and stranded them all...three times entered games with the bases loaded and did not allow a run...in spring training did not pitch until 3/4 because of a sore right hip flexor.
1997
Joined the Reds on 8/8 and went 2-2 with a 4.39 with one save in 12 games (six starts)...made his first six apps as a starter (2-2, 4.71) and his last six apps in relief (0-0, 1.93, 1sv)...began the season at Triple-A Indianapolis, where he went 7-4 with a 2.82 in 19 starts and one relief appearance and finished the season ranked T2nd in the American Association in ERA...his contract was purchased from Indy on 8/8 and the next day vs. L.A. made his first Major League appearance since 10/1/95 and his first ML start since 9/27/95...in that game threw a career-high 7.0 innings to earn the 3-2 victory, his first ML win since 6/11/95...matched his career high with 7.0 innings in his next start, a 10-inning, 5-4 loss at San Diego...suffered the 5-3 loss on 8/20 vs Colorado but had a career-high eight strikeouts...on 9/5 vs. Pittsburgh recorded his first Major League hit, an RBI-single in the fourth inning off Jason Schmidt that snapped a 2-2 tie...in the 4-3 victory on 9/25 at St. Louis, pitched a scoreless 14th inning for his second professional save (also 7/31/94 for Montreal at Florida)...made the only relief appearance of his minor league career in his first game after he came off the DL, on 6/7 vs. New Orleans (1.0IP, 1H).
1996
Spent entire season with Triple-A Indianapolis, going 6-3 with a 2.77 ERA in 11 games started...season was cut short by a separated left shoulder suffered in June...on 5/20 and 5/25 did not allow a walk in consecutive starts (16.1IP, 1ER) and was named American Association Pitcher of the Week...was ranked by Baseball America as the league's best control pitcher (1.2 walks per 9.0IP).
1995
Was recalled by Montreal three times, going 1-2 with a 7.01 ERA in 19 games (one start)...collected his only Major-League win of the season on 6/11 at San Francisco...for Triple-A Ottawa was 2-3 with a 3.90 ERA in 12 strarts.
1994
Split the strike-shortened season between Montreal and Triple-A Ottawa...for the Expos was 1-1 with a 6.08 ERA in seven games (five starts)...suffered chronic back pain in spring training and began the season on Ottawa's disabled list...was reinstated on 5/6...on 5/27 vs. Colorado made his Major League debut and earned the victory (6.0IP, 4H, 1ER)...made four more starts for the Expos before he returned to the minor leagues...on 7/31 was recalled again and threw 3.1 scoreless innings vs. Florida to earn the save in his first career relief appearance...returned to Ottawa on 8/11, the day before the strike.

Was 7-2 with a 2.16 ERA in 16 starts at Double-A Harrisburg and was an Eastern League All-Star...was leading the EL in ERA (2.16) when he was promoted to Triple-A Ottawa on 8/7...was 2-1 with a 3.12 ERA in six starts.

Led the Midwest League and all Expos minor league pitchers in strikeouts (176) and was 14-8 with a 2.84 ERA in 27 starts...was a ML All-Star selection...among Midwest League leaders ranked second in IP (187.0), T2nd in starts and CG (7) and fourth in wins.

At Class A Sumter was 6-9 with a 3.26 ERA in 24 starts...ranked T4th in the South Atlantic League with 5 CG...allowed 2 earned runs or fewer in 18-of-24 starts.
