Endured rough 1st Half while suffering from effects of tendinitis in right hand, but dominated following All-Star Break to anchor Giants relief corps that posted 2.89 ERA, 2nd-lowest mark in baseball (ATL led at 2.60)...finished season with deceiving 4.17 ERA, as he was nearly unhittable during 2nd half...forged 1.47 ERA (5er, 30.2ip) over final 29 outings beginning July 22, logging 25-scoreless efforts while lowering his overall ERA 2.17 points (from 6.34)...held opposing hitters to microscopic .126 avg. Solidified role as Giants setup man by teaming with closer Robb Nen to form one of Majors' most imposing bullpen tandems...in 44 games in which both pitchers worked, pair combined to go 6-2 with 25 saves and 0.85 ERA (9er, 95.1ip)...in fact, over final 25 outings together (dating back to 2nd game of July 4 DH vs. Colorado), pair went 2-0 with 19 saves and 0.17 ERA (1er, 53.2ip)...individually, posted 4-2 mark with 3 saves and 2.64 ERA (24er, 81.2ip)...worked in team-high 76 games, yielding runs in just 14 outings...tied for 5th in NL for appearances (Montreal's Steve Kline led with 83)...notched 1st save as Giant June 14 vs. Reds, tossing 1.1-scoreless frames in SF's 6-2 win...was 6th career save, 1st since April 25, 1998 at Florida (with Arizona)...pitched in 3 games of NLDS vs. Mets, going 0-1 with 6.23 ERA (4.1ip, 3er)...suffered loss in Game 2, allowing single run in 10th inning after allowing 2-run homer in 9th.

Worked in middle and long relief in initial campaign with Giants...was particularly strong over final 36 outings (beginning May 23), logging 2-1 record with 2.54 ERA (14er, 46.0ip)...began run with 15-appearance stretch May 23-July 16 in which he was touched for just 1er over 17.2ip (0.51 ERA)...prior to May 23, struggled early as he was 0-2 with 6.20 ERA (14er, 20.1ip) in his initial 11 outings...recorded 1st win with Giants July 9 vs. St. Louis, working 2.0-perfect frames (4so) in SF's 5-4, 11-inning triumph...with bat, was 2-for-6 (.333) with 2B, HR, 3 RBI, sacrifice and HBP...slugged 1st career homer (and 1st ML hit) April 10 vs. San Diego (off Andy Ashby), accounting for SF's lone run in 11-1 setback vs. Padres...participated in Domincan Winter League following season, pitching for Licey.

Spent season with Arizona, opening initial year of franchise as closer...earned saves in 5 of 1st 9 appearances, however, was moved to setup role with emergence of Gregg Olson...after notching franchise's historic 1st save April 5 vs. S.F., followed with save in next outing 3 nights later at Dodger Stadium, tossing scoreless 9th in Arizona's 1st shutout to preserve Brian Anderson's 3-0 win...struggled with control May 12 vs. Chicago, walking 4 men after 2 were out to incur 7-6 loss to Cubs and was moved into set-up role...was placed on 15-day Disabled List with right hip flexor June 21-July 30...while on shelf, made rehabilitation outings for triple-A Tucson (1 game, 9.00 ERA) and rookie-league Tucson (3 games, 4.15 ERA).
1997
Marked 1st full year as reliever while with Reds organization after signing as free agent...opened year at triple-A Indianapolis, but was summoned to Cincinnati June 7 for remainder of season...did not post decision in 26 appearances for Reds, including spot start...provided his most impressive work in latter half of season...compiled 6.04 ERA through 1st 12 outings, then had 2.18 mark in his last 14 trips to hill...made 1st Major League start Aug. 25 at Colorado, allowing 2 runs in 4.2 innings, but was not involved in Cincinnati's 7-6 victory...followed that start with 9 relief appearances, surrendering only 2 runs in span of 10.0 innings for 1.80 ERA...established big league best with 5 strikeouts in 5.0-inning relief appearance vs. Los Angeles Aug. 8, retiring last 10 men faced and 13 of last 14.
