He and his wife, Hannah, were married in October, 2020...Some of his hobbies include fishing, playing the guitar and painting...Graduated from Lexington (Tenn.) High School. Also has his bachelor’s degree in exercise physiology from Mississippi State...In high school and college, Small donated money for each strikeout to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis...Missed his sophomore season at Mississippi State in 2017 after undergoing Tommy John surgery...Selected by Arizona in the 26th round of the 2018 draft but returned to school...Named the 2019 SEC Pitcher of the Year and was tabbed as the Division 1 National Pitcher of the Year by the College Baseball Foundation and American Baseball Coaches Association. Went 10-2 with a 1.93 ERA, 176 strikeouts and a .164 opposing batting average in 107.0 innings (18 starts)...Finished his career ranked third in career strikeouts at Mississippi State (318)...Selected with the 28th overall pick by the Brewers in the 2019 draft.

2024

Was acquired from Milwaukee on Feb. 6 in exchange for cash...Suffered a right oblique strain during Spring Training and was placed on the 60-day IL on March 28 prior to the start of the season...Made 10 rehab outings between the ACL Giants, Single-A San Jose and Triple-A Sacramento, giving up seven runs in nine innings with 11 strikeouts...Was reinstated on Aug. 15 and optioned to Triple-A Sacramento, where he appeared in four more games (4.0 IP, one H, five K) before landing in the IL once again on Aug. 30 with right foot inflammation, missing the remainder of the season...Was non-tendered on Nov. 22 and signed a Minor League deal with SF four days later.

2023

Spent the majority of the season pitching for Triple-A Nashville…went 2-4 with a 3.18 ERA (18er, 51.0ip) three saves, 61 strikeouts and a .212 opposing batting average in 38 games (two starts)...Missed a few weeks on the IL at Nashville with a left shoulder impingement from June 23-July 17...Also made two relief outings with Milwaukee (May 26 vs. SF and September 28 vs. STL)...Notched his first Major League save on Sept. 28 at STL.

2022

Entered the season as the ninth-best prospect in the organization according to Baseball America... Went 7-6 with a 4.46 ERA in 27 games (21 starts) at Triple-A Nashville... Held opponents to a .217 batting average with 114 strikeouts in 103.0 innings... His 114 strikeouts ranked ninth in the International League.....his 14 wild pitches led the league... Was named International League Pitcher of the Month for April after going 2-0 with a 0.77 ERA in five starts (23.1ip, 31k)... Was named International League Pitcher of the Week for 6/20-6/26 after his 2-1 win on 6/25 vs. Gwinnett.....allowed just one run on three hits over 7.0 innings (1bb, 10k, 1wp)... Appeared in two games with Milwaukee, both starts, posting a 7.11 ERA (6.1ip, 8h, 5r, 5er, 8bb, 7k, 1hr)... Made his Major League debut on 5/30 at Chicago-NL in the first game of a doubleheader and received no decision in the Brewers’ 7-6 win (2.2ip, 4h, 2r, 2er, 4bb, 4k).....his first career strikeout was Willson Contreras... His other start with Milwaukee came on 7/26 vs. Minnesota.....had no decision in the 7-6 win (3.2ip, 4h, 3r, 3er, 4bb, 3k, 1hr).

2021

Once again ranked as the organization’s fifth-best prospect by Baseball America...Selected to the Futures Game, where his teammates included current Giants OF Heliot Ramos and IF Marco Luciano...Made 18 starts between Double-A Biloxi, Triple-A Nashville and one rehab start in the Arizona Complex League...Pitched for Escogido in the Dominican Winter League and went 2-1 with a 1.80 ERA (four ER, 20.0 IP) in five starts...Was teammates with Albert Pujols in Pujols’ lone season playing in his native country.  

2020

Entered the year ranked as Milwaukee’s fifth-best prospect according to Baseball America...Spent the 2020 season at the Alternate Training Site in Appleton, Wis.

2019

Selected by Milwaukee in the first round (28th overall) of the First-Year Player Draft...signed by Scott Nichols...In his first professional season posted a 0.86 ERA in seven starts between Rookie Arizona and Class-A Wisconsin (21ip, 2er)…Held opponents to a .151 batting average with 36 strikeouts in 21.0 innings...posted a 0.71 WHIP.
