Graduated from Garneau High School in Orleans, Ontario in 1998...played for the Orleans Little League Junior Red Sox team that won the 1992 Canadian Championships. ... Went on to attend Norwalk Community Technical College (CT) where he walked on to the baseball team and played in the NJCAA World Series. ... Was drafted by Baltimore in the sixth round of the June 1999 draft. ... Became the 200th Canadian to play in the Major Leagues when he made his debut on April 17, 2002...became just the sixth Canadian-born player to strike out 200 batters in a season after he accomplished the feat in 2007. ... 2005
Began the season as one of the league's top starters, compiling a 5-1 record with a 2.08 ERA in the first six weeks. He missed two months with a strained left knee and won only one of his final 15 starts. Best game was seven scoreless innings against the Phillies on May 21.
2004
Earned a spot in the starting rotation in spring training despite missing most of the 2003 season following ligament replacement surgery and finished the season among the top rookie pitchers in the majors. Led Major League rookies with 121 strikeouts...His 7.93 K/9IP would have been 7th among all American League pitchers if he had enough innings to qualify (162.0IP). Ranked 2nd to teammate Daniel Cabrera among Major League rookies in starts (26), was 3rd in innings pitched (137.1) and tied for 7th in wins (6). Averaged 19.4 pitches per innings, which would have topped the AL if he had enough innings to qualify... Cleveland's Cliff Lee led the league with 17.7 pitches per inning. Allowed 2 runs or less in 15 of his 26 starts and allowed more than 3 runs in an outing only 7 times...Had 7 "Quality Starts" (6 or more IP, 3 or fewer ER) and 6 other starts of at least 5.0 innings in which he allowed 2 runs or fewer. Pitched 6.0 or more innings in only 10 of his 26 starts...Left starts with a lead on 3 occasions in which the bullpen was unable to hold on for the win. The Orioles went into extra innings in 5 of his starts...He also had 3 starts interrupted by rain delays and 2 other starts postponed by rain. Was named as the 5th starter in the Orioles rotation during the final week of spring training at the same time he was optioned to AAA Ottawa because of off-days in the O's opening week schedule...Was recalled for the 6th game of the season on April 10 and made his first major league start that night, going 3.0 innings without receiving a decision in the Orioles' 11-3 win at Tampa Bay. Returned to Ottawa several days after that start when more off-days and rainouts in the schedule caused no need for a 5th starter until April 24. Made 2 starts for the Lynx before being recalled again on April 24 to start against Toronto...Went 0-1 with a 5.64 ERA in his first 5 starts through May 13. Earned his first major league victory on May 19 at Seattle, beginning an 8-start stretch in which he went 3-1 with a 2.63 ERA (41.0IP, 12ER) through the month of June. Established career highs on July 3 at Philadelphia, pitching 7.0 innings and striking out 10 batters in a no-decision...The 10 strikeouts were the most by an Oriole during the 2004 season and most by an O's rookie since Rocky Coppinger struck out 11 on 9/8/96 vs. Detroit. From July through September, however, he went 3-8 with a 5.65 ERA in 13 starts and allowed 4 or more runs in 8 starts...His best outing came on September 2 at Tampa Bay, when he allowed one run in 7.0 innings to beat Tampa Bay, 13-2, for his final victory. Remained in the rotation until being shut down in mid-September...Lasted just 2.0 innings and allowed 7 runs (one earned) in his last start on September 8 vs. Minnesota. Did not pitch again until working 4.0 innings of 2-hit relief, allowing one unearned run, in the nightcap of a doubleheader vs. Boston on October 2.

Spent the season on the 60-day disabled list rehabbing after undergoing ligament replacement surgery in his left elbow in September 2002...Worked out at the Orioles' minor league complex in Sarasota before making 6 starts in August on strict pitch counts but did not pitch long enough to earn a win in any outing...Made 3 rehab starts for the Gulf Coast Orioles before moving to Class AAberdeen for 2 starts and Frederick for one...Combined to go 0-1 with a 2.79 ERA in his 6 starts (19.1IP, 16H, 6R/ER, 4BB, 26K)...Lost his final start, 8/31 for Frederick vs. Winston-Salem, allowing 3 earned runs in 3.2 IP...Was rated by

2002
Underwent successful ligament replacement ("Tommy John") surgery on his left elbow on Sept. 10...surgery was performed by Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, AL...left his last start, June 26 for Bowie (AA), in the 8th inning with pain in his left elbow and went on the minor league disabled list on July 1...became the 200th Canadian native to play in the Majors when he made his big league debut on April 17 at New York (AL)...recalled from Bowie on April 16 and made two relief appearances before being optioned back to Bowie on April 23...was 3-1 with a 1.39 ERA (5 ER, 32.2 IP) in 5 starts in June and was selected as the Orioles Pitcher of the Month...named the Eastern League's Best Pitching Prospect in Baseball America's annual "Tools of the Trade" poll.

Led Orioles farmhands with a 2.15 ERA for Frederick (A)...137 strikeouts ranked 4th in the farm system despite missing 1 1/2 months...led Carolina League starters with 12.15 K/9 IP (130 in 96.1 IP) and held opposing hitters to a league-low .198 batting average... allowed only 9.62 baserunners per 9 IP, 3rd-best in the league...did not walk more than 2 batters in any start...allowed one earned run or less in 13 of 17 starts.
