Allowed only 7 of 30 inherited runners to scored (23.3%), good for 12th in the A.L...Recorded a streak of 14-consecutive scoreless innings from April 11-May 17, the longest streak by an Indians reliever in 2005...Did not allow an earned run through his 1st 17.0 innings, spanning 13 appearances...Struggled mid-season, posting a 6.20 ERA (20.1 IP, 14 ER) from May 17-June 25...following that stretch, recorded a 2.72 ERA (36.1 IP, 11 ER) in 29 appearances the remainder of the season.
2004
Began the season as Cleveland's closer, struggled in the spot and returned to the set-up position in mid-May, where he blossomed and regained his dominant form...appearing in a career-high 72 games, he went 7-3 with 5 saves and a 3.72 ERA, fanning 78 batters in 77.1 innings...tied for 4th in the league in relief wins, tied for 12th in appearances and ranked 15th in relief innings pitched...after carrying a 12.34 ERA (16 ER/11.2 IP) thru his first 12 outings of the season, turned his season around as a set-up man, going 7-2 with a 2.19 ERA (16 ER/65.2 IP) in his final 60 appearances to lower his ERA 8.62 points to a season-ending 3.72...won a career-high and 2004 Cleveland season-high 7 decisions in a row from May 29-August 25, the longest winning streak among all major league relievers and tied for the 7th-longest winning streak in the American League all season...as a closer to start the year, blew his first 2 save chances Opening Day at Minnesota on April 6 and April 10 at Kansas City before recording his first 2 saves April 18 vs. Detroit and April 22 vs. Kansas City...was removed from the closer's role after posting an ERA of 12.27 in 8 April outings...would soon turn in his best months of the season in June (1.00 ERA, 2 ER/18.0 IP with 26 strikeouts) and August (1.76 ERA, 3 ER/15.1 IP)...in his final 32 outings from July 22 through the end of the season, had a 2.03 ERA (7 ER/31.0 IP), while his ERA after August 2 was 1.73 (5 ER/26.0 IP) in 27 outings...26 of his 35 2nd-half outings were scoreless...fanned a season-high 5 batters June 11 vs. Cincinnati...ranked 2nd on the club with 9 holds...his .224 batting average allowed vs. lefties was 12th-best among league pitchers.
2003
Turned in another consistent campaign, concluding as the club's closer for the final 6 weeks and going 7-for-7 in save opportunities...overall, went 2-2 with 8 saves and a 2.29 ERA, the 8th-lowest ERA among American League relievers...led the club with 17 holds (tied for 10th in the league) finished 2nd on the team with 68 appearances and 8 saves...his .138 batting average vs. lefties was the lowest in the A.L...ranked fourth among league relievers with a .196 batting average against and was 5th with a .181 average against with runners on base...only 9 of his 39 inherited runners scored, the 8th-best percent (23) in the league...got off to a shaky start, allowing 6 runs and 2 home runs in his first 4 appearances (covering 4.1 innings) and took a 12.46 ERA into his 5th outing of the season...suffered a blown save on Opening Day at Baltimore, March 31, allowing a 2-run homer to Marty Cordova...after posting a 4.22 ERA (5 ER/10.2 IP) in 8 outings in April, finished the season by posting an ERA of 2.84 or lower in each of the season's final 5 months, 1.98 or lower in 4 of the months...in fact, he boasted a microscopic 1.66 ERA (13 ER/70.1 IP) in his final 64 outings of the season, a 1.56 ERA (10 ER/57.2 IP) in his final 55 outings, and a 1.07 ERA (3 ER/25.1 IP) in his final 24 games from July 27 on...did not allow an earned run in 14 consecutive outings, covering 13.1 innings, for a month from May 15-June 15...posted a 0.66 ERA (1 ER/13.2 IP) in 13 outings in August, holding foes to a .109 batting average...was named the club's closer on August 15 and saved all 7 chances through the rest of the year...issued only 20 walks while fanning 82 in 74.2 innings, an average of 2.4 walks and 9.9 strikeouts per 9 innings...limited opponents to a .191 batting average with runners in scoring position, a .205 mark in such situations and 2 outs...was practically unhittable when the count reached 2 strikes, holding opponents to a .109 batting average...opponents batted just .050 (1-for-20) when facing a 3-2 count...the Indians went 40-28 (.588) in games in which he appeared...retired 69 percent of first batters faced (47-of-68).
2002
Split the season between the Indians, Triple-A Buffalo and the disabled list, going 2-2 with a 5.26 ERA in 51 big league outings...struck out 65 in 51.1 innings with the Tribe, an average of 11.4 strikeouts per 9 innings, the 3rd-best mark among relievers in the majors...after a fantastic spring during which he posted a 0.75 ERA (1 ER/12.0 IP) in 10 outings, carried that momentum into April by not allowing an earned run in his first 8 outings and taking a 3.86 ERA (5 ER/11.2 IP) into May...struggled in May and June, combining to go 1-1 with a 7.31 ERA (13 ER/16.0 IP) in 21 outings before being placed on the 15-day disabled list on June 19 with a lower back and right hamstring strain...was on the shelf through July 17 after making 4 rehab outings with Triple-A Akron from July 4-14...upon his activation, made 2 outings (2 ER/3.0 IP) and was optioned to Buffalo July 20 when Charles Nagy returned from injury...was recalled on August 15 for the rest of the season...much like April, posted a solid September by going 1-0 with a 3.29 ERA (5 ER/ 13.2 IP), including a 1.59 ERA (2 ER/11.1 IP) in his final 8 appearances of the season...struck out a career-high 6 batters September 11 vs. Toronto.
2001
Established himself as a reliable big league set-up man following a strong 2nd half with the Indians after beginning the campaign with Triple-A Buffalo...stayed healthy through the entire season after spending nearly all of 2000 on the disabled list with back and shoulder problems...went 2-0 with a 1.98 ERA in 26 relief outings for the Tribe, limiting foes to a .206 batting average...tossed scoreless ball in 21 of the 26 outings...made a brief 4-day appearance with Cleveland from June 23-26, returned to Buffalo and then was recalled to the Indians on July 23 for the rest of the season...made his 2001 Indians debut June 25 at New York, tossing 2.2 scoreless frames, a career high...was impressive in August, going 1-0 with one save and a 2.13 ERA (3 ER/12.2 IP) in 12 appearances...earned his first career save August 22 at Oakland...his August 26 win at Seattle was the 2nd of his career, and his 2nd against his hometown Mariners...in his last 15 outings from August 22 through the end of the season, went 2-0 with a 2.89 ERA (3 ER/9.1 IP)...overall, limited foes to a .161 batting average (5-for-31) with runners in scoring position, including a .067 mark (1-for-15) in those situations and 2 outs...in the Division Series vs. Seattle, provided 3 scoreless outings covering 3.2 innings, fanning 5...spent the first half of the season with Buffalo, going 1-2 with a 2.36 ERA in 38 relief outings...the 15 saves ranked 5th in the International League at the time of his 2nd recall to Cleveland.
2000
Battled injuries for nearly the entire season and was limited to just 5 appearances between Double-A Akron and Triple-A Buffalo...reported to spring training in February and began experiencing soreness in his lower back...was diagnosed as a bulging disc, and he was placed on the disabled list March 25...began a 30-day rehab assignment in Akron on April 22, then made 2 relief outings for Buffalo on April 25 and 28 before feeling more pain in the region...had surgery May 5 in Cleveland by Dr. Louis Keppler to repair the bulging disc...was transferred to the 60-day disabled list May 29...began a rehab assignment with Akron on August 28 and was activated by the Indians on September 4, but did not pitch again...attempted to pitch for Buffalo in the International League playoffs but experienced pain in his throwing shoulder...was placed back on the 60-day disabled list on September 14 with a torn labrum in his right shoulder and had surgery September 26 in Los Angeles by Dr. Lewis Yocum.
1999
Turned in another sensational minor league campaign and got his first taste of the big leagues during the final 7 weeks of the season...began the season in Double-A Akron, where he allowed only 5 hits in 23.2 innings en route to 12 saves and a 1.90 ERA in 23 outings...held Eastern League batters to a .067 average (5-for-75) with one homer and 33 strikeouts in 23.2 innings...promoted to Triple-A Buffalo June 21, he went 3-0 with 4 saves and a 0.79 ERA in 19 outings to earn his first call to the majors on August 9, when his contract was purchased by the Indians...made his major league debut Augut 14 vs. Baltimore and pitched a scoreless 9th inning, fanning Albert Belle looking to end the frame...earned his first major league win in his hometown of Seattle on August 22 at Safeco Field, tossing 1.2 scoreless innings...was placed on the disabled list August 31 with a strained left oblique muscle and began a rehab assignment on September 2, appearing in 4 games and tossing 5.0 hitless innings...was activated on September 10 and remained with the Tribe the rest of the way, going 1-1 with an 8.36 ERA in 12 relief appearances...was eligible for post-season play, but was not on the 25-man Division Series roster...at the minor league level, combined to go 3-0 with 18 saves and a 1.23 ERA (7 ER/51.1 IP) in 46 outings...held minor league hitters to a combined .113 batting average against (19-for-168), surrendering only one long ball.
1998
Earned Indians Minor League Pitcher of the Year and Carolina League Reliever of the Year kudos...went 1-1 with a league-high 33 saves and a 2.33 ERA in 53 outings for Single-A Kinston...won league Rolaids Reliever of the Year honors with 99 points and was a mid-season and post-season CL All-Star...struck out 67 in 54.0 innings, an average of 11.2 strikeouts per 9 innings...was promoted to Double-A Akron on September 1 and made 2 scoreless outings, notching one save...the 34 saves in 1998 ranked 3rd among all minor leaguers...was named best reliever in the Carolina League by
Baseball America.
