Finished the season as a primary set-up man... Set career highs for longest relief outing and most strikeouts in a game as a reliever, while also notching the first two saves of his major-league career... Finished 13 games for the Expos, while holding opposing batters to an overall .210 batting average, allowing only 34 hits in his 46.2 innings worked... Spent most of the 2000 season at AAA-Pawtucket in the Boston organization and had a cup of coffee with the Red Sox pitching out of the bullpen in June... Had his contract selected by Boston on June 2 when Andy Sheets was optioned to class AAA... Appeared in relief for the Sox on June 3 vs Philadelphia, hurling 1.1 scoreless inning and on June 7 vs Florida... In that game, wnet 2.0 innings and allowed three runs (earned) on two hits... Was optioned back to Pawtucket on June 9... Was taken off the 40-man roster on September 5... In his 21 starts for Pawtucket he was 7-9 with a 5.10 ERA and 0-1 with a 1.80 ERA in three relief appearances for the PawSox... Smith began the 1999 season with AAA-Ottawa and started 11 games, going 5-4 with a 3.68 ERA... Recalled to Montreal on June 7 when Javier Vazquez was optioned to the Lynx and made his major league debut on June 8 vs Boston... Started and got first major league win that night in Expos' 5-1 win, going 7.0 innings and striking out out nine batters... At one point retired 20 in a row... The 9 K's tied the Expos' franchise record in a ML debut... Lost his next five decisions between June 20 and July 21 allowing 21 earned runs in 24.1 innings for a 7.77 ERA during that span... Then earned two decisions in a row ... Tossed a season and career-high 7.1 innings on August 1 at Milwaukee in a 10-4 win... Allowed Tony Gwynn's 3,000th hit on August 6 vs San Diego... Went 0-4 with a 7.36 ERA for his last seven starts... Did not appear in a game after September 17 due to right shoulder tendonitis...
