Johnson had a very productive rookie season when he batted .275 with 15 homers and 58 RBIs, but he started 2006 in a huge slump and didn't hit over .200 until June 4. He didn't get his first hit until April 14 and was sent down to Triple-A on July 14, when he was batting .237. Johnson did hit .321 in June with four homers and 16 RBIs, but in 22 at-bats in July, he hit .182. In Sacramento, Johnson hit .314 with seven homers and 44 RBIs in 46 games. He returned to the A's for the September callups and hit .238 that month in 42 at-bats. In his first start back from Sacramento, Johnson hit a grand slam against Baltimore on Sept. 3. Johnson had a two-homer game on July 11 against the Yankees.
2005
