A non-roster invitee to spring training, Carlos not only made the club, but established a team record with 19 pinch hits... he closed the year with 5 hits in his last 7 pinch at bats, capped by a pinch single in the season finale on September 28 against the Cardinals to eclipse David Dellucci's mark of 18 during the 2001 season...Baerga finished with a major league-leading .345 average (among players with at least 40 pinch at bats) and the second-highest hit total (trailing only Colorado's Greg Norton with 23)...Carlos shattered his previous single-season pinch hit best of 11 set with Cleveland in 1990...he made 15 starts at second base, 13 at first, 4 at third and 6 as the designated hitter...he batted .317 (45-for-142) with 19 runs, 9 doubles, 3 homers and 28 RBI as a starter...he had a career day on April 17 in an 11-2 win over Colorado, providing a pair of home runs and 7 RBI, his eighth career multi-homer game, while the RBI total was 2 more than his previous personal best...included was a second inning grand slam off of Jason Jennings, the second slam of Baerga's career, first since July 20, 1993...Carlos followed with a 2-run shot in the fourth for his first multihomer effort since May 23, 1995, at Fenway Park as a member of the Indians...the 7 RBI were the second-most in franchise history trailing only Erubiel Durazo's 9 on May 17, 2002, vs. Philadelphia...Baerga had at least one hit in 8 of his first 9 starts, batting .560 (14-for-25) with 11 RBI...he took Pittsburgh's Joe Beimel deep on May 16 for his first righthanded homer since May 24, 1998, off of former Brewer and '03 teammate Mike Myers...Carlos snapped an 0-for-9 pinch hit drought on July 2 in Colorado with his 1,500th career hit... he propelled Arizona into a lead over Colorado on July 8 with a pinch 3-run homer off of Steve Reed, the fourth pinch blast of his career, first since taking the Rockies' Dave Wainhouse deep on July 2, 1999, while with San Diego...the pinch homer off of Reed marked the 700th run of Baerga's career and was his 10th pinch hit of the season, matching his American League-leading total from 2002...he closed the season with a .426 average (20-for-47) over his final 33 games spanning August and September...the 39 RBI marked his highest total since driving in 53 runs in 1998 with the Mets.

Signed by Red Sox to a minor lg. contract on 12/18...Played 53 G in the Independent Atlantic Lg. for the Long Island Ducks and hit .315 (64-203) w/38 R, 9 2B, 3 3B, 9 HR, 44 RBI, 19 BB, 3 SB and 24 K...Selected to the 2001 Atlantic League All-Star team...Played all 53 G at 3B as well as a brief app. at 2B (1 G)...Committed 11 E in 167 TC (.934 fld. pct.)...Was invited to spring training by Sea. in March.
