Graduated from Belleville West High School in Illinois where he played both baseball and football...he and his wife, Christine, were married on 12/6/03 in Belleville where the couple makes their off-season home.
2005
Finished second in International League batting race (.331 to .325) behind Danny Sandoval of Scranton/W-B ... Was also second in slugging pct. (.554) and had league-leading .426 on-base pct and .980 OPS ... Began the season with the Met's Triple-A Norfolk club where he batted .371 in 24 April games and drove in 25 runs ... Had a short stint on the DL 5/18-28 with a right abdominal strain ... A .339 batting average in May and .347 in June earned him a promotion to New York on 6/15 with the Mets ... Walked three times in his first game with the Mets at OAK on 6/16 and scored twice. Played in 15 games with the Mets and was the DH twice (at SEA) and went 2-for-6 as a pinch-hitter, including a home run 6/21 at PHI ... Returned to Norfolk on 7/20 where he batted .285 the rest of the season ... Defensively played 71 games at first base with Norfolk, nine in left field, 17 games as the DH and three pinch-hit at-bats.
