Appeared in just 45 games, including 42 starts, because of a torn
right groin muscle and a "sports hernia," a weakness in the abdominal
musculature of his right groin...twice was on the disabled list
(5/17-6/14, 6/29-rest of the season)...didn't play after 6/28...an
MRI on 6/29 showed the groin muscle was partially torn off the
bone...an MRI on 7/18 showed no improvement...on 8/24 had surgery to
repair the sports hernia (Dr. JoAnn Lohr, Dr. Timothy Kremchek)...
missed most of the spring exhibition schedule with the injuries,
appearing in only nine games.
On 5/3 vs Los Angeles, left the game with a tight right groin and
the next day was examined by surgeon Dr. JoAnn Lohr...was cleared to
play and returned to action on 5/6, then appeared in nine more games
before he went on the DL.
Prior to his stint on the disabled list went hitless in his last
17 AB (5/12-5/16), his longest drought since a career-high 0-for-30
in 12 games from 4/22-5/6, 1998, and had three hits in his last 35 AB
to drop BA from .354 to .274.
Reached base safely in 26 of his first 29 games, but did not
reach base in any of his last four games prior to going on the DL.
Returned to action on 6/15 vs Colorado, and that night snapped
the season-high 0-for-17 skid with a single off Ron Villone.
Appeared in 12 more games (.205, 1 HR, 3 RBIs) before he returned
to the DL for the second time.
Started the Reds' first 11 games of the season before he was
sidelined with a strained left wrist suffered while diving for a
ground ball on 4/13 at Mets...missed two games with that injury
(4/14 & 4/15 at Mets) but then played regularly until he was sidlined
by the tight right groin on 5/3.
On 4/20 vs Mets hit his first career grand slam (off Al Leiter)
in his 6,735th at bat...among active players had the most AB without
a slam...Seattle's Mark McLemore became the active slamless leader
(4,910 AB)...hit his other homer on 6/26 at St. Louis, when he teamed
with Alex Ochoa to become the first set of Reds players to lead off a
game with consecutive homers since Thomas Howard and Hal Morris did
it on 9/9/96 vs Los Angeles...that homer off Andy Benes was his last
hit of the season and 2,048th hit of his career, tying him with
Johnny Bench for third on the club's all-time list.
On 6/28 vs Cubs, aggravated the groin injury while fielding a
ground ball on the outfield grass...the next day went on the DL and
didn't play again the rest of the season.
From 4/24-5/1, had a season-high six-game hitting streak...had
nine multi-hit games, including five two-hit games, two three-hit
games and two four-hit games (4/25 at San Francisco, 6/19 vs
Milwaukee)....had four infield hits.
Committed nine errors in his first 20 games, but did not commit
an error in his last 24 games, his longest errorless streak of the
season...from 4/25-4/27 committed errors in three consecutive games
for just the fourth time in his career.
Was one of seven players who made eight appearances on the club's
60-day disabled list (LHP Justin Atchley, RHP Seth Etherton, RHP

2000
Overcame a series of injuries to hit .300 for the ninth time in his career...missed 59 starts with injuries that included a torn sheath that surrounds the tendon on the middle finger of his left hand (21g, 4/22-5/15), a sprained medial collateral ligament in his left knee (5g, 8/5-8/9) and a dislocated left middle finger (33g, 8/28-end of season)....the Reds went 36-23 in his missed starts...the tendon and knee injuries required surgeries...the left middle finger injuries were not related...on 9/8, after it was determined that the dislocated left middle finger would sideline him for 10-14 more days, he had arthroscopic surgery to repair the damaged cartilage in his left knee (Dr. Timothy Kremcheck)...could have played the last week of the season, if necessary, but did not...on 7/26 vs Hou left the game with a dislocated right pinky finger but did not miss a game...was on the disabled list only for the hand injury (4/22-5/15)...appeared in his last game of the season on 8/27 at Fla, when he dislocated the left middle finger.
After 6/21 his BA did not drop below .300 the rest of the season...reached base in 93 of his 102 games.
Led the club with 93 starts batting second and 100 starts at SS...in six games from 6/26-7/1 batted leadoff for the only time all season (.261) and for the first times since 7/3/96...twice hit in the third spot (6/1 vs Montreal, 6/13 at San Francisco), his first times in that spot since 9/14/98 vs Milwaukee.
Had 34 multi-hitgames, including a four-hit game (7/2 at Arizona) and a career-high five-hit game 6/24 vs San Diego)...had 14 infield hits.
Committed just one error in his last 56 games (7/20 at Houston) and finished the season with 28 consecutive errorless games, his longest streak of the season...from 4/10-4/12, for only the third time committed an error in a career-high three straight games (10/1-10/4, 1987 & 4/29-5/1, 1998).
Began the season by hitting .355 (2 HR, 13 RBIs, 5 SB) in his first 17 games before he went on the DL with the tendon injury to his left middle finger...suffered the injury while diving for a ground ball on 4/21 vs Los Angeles and had surgery that night (Dr. Ken Hannington)...earlier in that game recorded the 350th stolen base of his career...was off to his best start since 1995, when he won the MVP Award...prior to the injury had hit safely in 15 of the Reds' first 17 games, including a season-high 10-game hitting streak
