2003
In 2003, had what stands as the best offensive season in club history...Set franchise records for RBI (107), batting average (.311) and tied the mark for home runs with 34 (tied Jose Canseco's total in 1999)... Also set club records for hits (198), doubles (47), extra base hits (84), total bases (353), runs (91), intentional walks (17) and slugging (.555)...He and Toronto's Vernon Wells were the only 2 players in the AL's top 10 in all 3 triple crown categories and Gary Sheffield and Albert Pujols were the only two in the NL...Huff was 9th in the AL in batting and home runs and tied for 8th in RBI...Finished 4th in the majors with 84 extra base hits, 21 more than any Rays player has ever had...Only Pujols (95), Todd Helton (87) and Wells (87) had more...Was also 3rd in the AL in doubles, 4th in total bases, tied with Nomar Garciaparra and Alfonso Soriano for 5th in hits and 7th in slugging... Only Manny Ramirez (28) and Carlos Delgado (23) had more intentional walks than Huff (17) in the AL...Also reached base 259 times, 6th most in the AL...Only 11 players in ML history (5 in the AL) matched Huff's numbers for hits (198), doubles (47), home runs (34) and RBI (107)...That list is Chuck Klein (1930, 1932), Babe Herman (1930), Rogers Hornsby (1929), Albert Pujols (2003), Lou Gehrig (1927), Todd Helton (2000), Alex Rodriguez (1996), Don Mattingly (1985), Frank Robinson (1962), Albert Belle (1998) and Hank Greenberg (1937)...Made 102 starts in right field, his first games in the outfield since his junior year at the University of Miami... His 6 errors tied for most among AL rightfielders (tied with Anaheim's Tim Salmon)...On Sept. 6 vs. Oakland, became just the 3rd Devil Ray to steal home, but the first that didn't involve a double steal.
2002
In 2002, he did not join the Rays until the 49th game of the season and ended up 9 plate appearances shy of qualifying with the AL's 7th best average at .313...Would have set the club record for highest average in a season...Became the first player since Detroit's Tony Clark in 1996 to lead his team in home runs after starting the season in the minor leagues...Only 4 others in the AL matched his numbers in home runs (23) and batting average (.313): Manny Ramirez, Mike Sweeney, Magglio Ordonez and Jason Giambi...Had 97 hits from July 19 through the remainder of the season, tops in the major leagues...His 103 hits after the All-Star Break tied Bernie Williams for most in the majors...Had the 2nd longest hitting streak in club history - 17 games -that ended Sept. 11 against Pedro Martinez...Set the club record for hits in a month (44) in August, breaking Randy Winn's mark of 42 set in June...ranked 2nd in the AL to NYY Bernie Williams (47).
2001
