Gary Andrew Carignan was originally signed by A's scout Neil Avent...graduated from Norwich (CT) Free Academy High School...attended the University of North Carolina...led the ACC and tied for fourth nationally with 15 saves in 2006...was named All-ACC in 2007 after tying for the NCAA Division I lead with 18 saves...his great grandfather, Augustine "Lefty" Dugas, played for the Pittsburgh Pirates (1930, 32), Philadelphia Phillies (1933) and Washington Senators (1934).
2012
Was on the A's Opening Day roster and went 1-1 with a 4.66 ERA in 11 relief appearances over three stints before undergoing "Tommy John" surgery on his right elbow June 19...did not allow a home run in 9.2 innings, but issued 10 walks while striking out eight...allowed a .242 opponents batting average, including .227 (5 for 22) by right-handed hitters and .273 (3 for 11) against left-handed hitters...opponents hit .167 with the bases empty compared to .286 with runners on base...did not allow a run in four outings on one day of rest or fewer (2.2 ip); had a 6.43 ERA (5 er in 7.0 ip) in his other seven appearances...allowed each of his two inherited runners to score...first batters faced were 3-for-10 (.300) with a walk...was charged with his first career loss on Opening Day in Tokyo March 28 against Seattle... entered the game in the 11th inning with the scored tied at 1-1 and allowed a RBI single to Ackley in a game the A's would lose 3-1...tossed a career-high tying 2.0 scoreless innings against the Mariners April 6...picked up his first Major League win April 11 against Kansas City when he recorded the final out in the 12th inning of the A's 5-4, 12-inning win...had a 6.23 ERA in five relief appearances when he was optioned to Sacramento April 17...was recalled May 11 and allowed two runs in 2.0 innings over two outings before he was sent back to Sacramento May 16...joined the A's for a third time May 27 and did not allow a run in four games (3.1 ip, 2 h, 2 bb, 4 so) before he was placed on the 15-day disabled list June 6 with a sprained ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow...was transferred to the 60-day DL June 9... had reconstructive surgery to the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow June 19... the surgery was performed in New York City by Dr. David Altchek, medical director of the New York Mets...spent the balance of the season at Triple-A Sacramento where he was 2-0 with a save and a 2.70 ERA in nine relief appearances...walked just one while striking out 21 in 13.1 innings (14.18 strikeouts per nine innings)...did not allow a home run...held the opposition to a .184 batting average, including .167 (4-for-24) against left-handed hitters compared to .200 (5-for-25) against right-handers...opponents were 0-for-12 with no walks when leading off an inning...allowed a .139 batting average with the bases empty compared to .308 with runners on, including .429 with runners in scoring position.

Pitched at three different levels in the A's farm system, combining for a 1-0 record with eight saves and a 1.85 ERA in 33 relief appearances with Single-A Stockton, Double-A Midland and Triple-A Sacramento... earned a September promotion to Oakland when rosters expanded and posted a 4.26 ERA in six relief appearances in his Major League debut...allowed a .276 opponents batting average, which included a .143 (1 for 7) mark against left-handed hitters and .318 (7 for 22) against right-handers...opponents hit .364 with the bases empty, .222 with runners on...first batters faced were 1-for-6...stranded his only two inherited runners...was selected from Sacramento Sept. 2 and made his Major League debut that night against Seattle...tossed a scoreless ninth inning, retiring three of the four batters he faced in a 9-2 A's win...recorded his first career strikeout in his second outing Sept. 6 against Kansas City (Francouer)... struck out three batters in 2.0 innings against the Royals...allowed all three of his earned runs in one outing, Sept. 11 at Texas...pitched for Phoenix in the Arizona Fall League following the season...was 0-2 with a 6.57 ERA in 12 relief appearances...struck out 16 in 12.1 innings.
MINORS: Combined at all three minor league stops for a .181 opponents batting average...that included .145 (12 for 83) against right-handed hitters, compared to .236 (13 for 55) with both of his home runs against left-handed hitters...struck out 46 batters in 39.0 innings, an average of 10.62 per nine innings...was a perfect 8-for-8 in save opportunities...opponents hit .156 when leading off an inning... yielded a .139 average with the bases empty, .237 with runners on...allowed 7 of 19 (36.8%) inherited runners to score...began the season on the disabled list with a right heel contusion...was reinstated May 20 and pitched in two games with the River Cats (4.50 ERA) before returning to the disabled list May 23 with a strained right forearm...was reinstated from the DL June 2 and transferred to Stockton...went 1-0 with five saves with the Ports and did not allow an earned run in 11.0 innings...right-handed hitters were 0-for-22 off him and he allowed a .108 batting average overall...the win and all five of his saves came over his final six outings, all scoreless (7.0 ip, 2 h, 1 bb, 8 so)...was transferred to Midland July 1 and had three saves and a 3.18 ERA in 11 appearances with the Rockhounds...allowed 5 of 8 (62.5%) inherited runners to score...surrendered just one run over his final seven outings (1.08 ERA)...moved back to Sacramento July 30 and compiled a 1.84 ERA in 11 relief appearances...had no decisions and a 2.16 ERA in 13 relief appearances overall with the River Cats in his Triple-A debut...held the opposition to a .186 batting average, including .077 with runners in scoring position...allowed just 1 of 7 (14.3%) inherited runners to score...yielded three runs on a five hits, both season-highs, in 0.2 innings Aug. 7 at Iowa...did not allow a run over his final eight outings and 12.0 innings...tossed a season-high 2.1 innings in consecutive outings Aug. 14 against Round Rock and Aug. 17 against Albuquerque...struck out a season high four batters on the 14th.

Missed over two months of the season due to two stints on the disabled list...went 3-3 with a 6.27 ERA in 30 relief appearances with Single-A Stockton...the ERA was the highest of his career but he held the opposition to a .228 batting average...struck out 44 batters in 33.0 innings (12.00 per nine innings) but also issued 34 walks (9.27 per nine innings)...had a career-high seven wild pitches... his opponents batting average included a .214 mark against right-handed hitters and .245 against lefthanders... surrendered both of his home runs to lefties...opponents hit .169 with the bases empty, .344 with runners in scoring position...allowed 2 of 6 (33.3%) inherited runners to score...began the season on the disabled list with a right elbow strain...was reinstated May 4...posted a 3.12 ERA over his first eight games but then allowed at least one run in seven consecutive appearances from May 24 to June 12 (10.80 ERA)...issued a season-high three walks June 9 against Bakersfield...walked two or more in 13 of his 30 appearances...did not allow a run over a seven-game stretch from June 15 to July 3 (7.1 innings)...struck out a season-high four batters in 2.0 scoreless innings July 14 against Visalia...placed on the DL for the second time July 23 with a strained right oblique muscle...was reinstated Aug. 27, posting a 5.40 ERA over his final three games...matched his season-high with four strikeouts in 2.0 perfect innings in his final outing Sept. 4 at Bakersfield...made one postseason appearance for the Ports and did not allow a run (1.0 ip, 1 h, 1 bb).

Missed nearly the entire season with right elbow problems...began the season on the disabled list with a right elbow strain...was reinstated June 15...appeared in two games for Single-A Stockton, posting a 4.50 ERA before returning to the DL July 1 with a right elbow strain...missed the remainder of the season.

Led the A's farm system with 28 saves after combining for a 4-4 record and 2.01 ERA in 55 relief appearances with Single-A Stockton and Double-A Midland...24 of the saves came at Midland, which was second most in the Texas League...his 28 saves tied for 11th in all of minor league baseball...had just one blown save for a save percentage of 96.6...allowed a .188 opponents batting average, which included .172 against right-handed hitters and .214 against left-handers...struck out 84 in 62.2 innings (12.1 per nine innings), but also issued 44 walks (6.3 per nine innings)...all four of his home runs allowed were solo shots hit by righties...yielded a .116 batting average with runners on base...began the year at Stockton and was 1-1 with four saves a 0.90 ERA and .147 opponents batting average in nine relief appearances...was promoted to Midland April 25 where he went 3-3 with a 2.22 ERA and .196 opponents batting average in 46 appearances...was 24-for-25 (96.0%) in saves chances, with his lone blown save coming in his third outing May 1 against Corpus Christi...went on to convert each of his final 23 save opportunities...pitched the eighth inning for the South in the Texas League All-Star Game June 25 (1.0 ip, 1 h, 1 r, 1 er, 1 bb, 1 so)...did not allow a run over his final nine outings and 12.2 innings... then pitched for the Arizona Fall League Champion Phoenix Desert Dogs, leading the league with six saves...ranked third among AFL relievers in opponents batting (.200)...was 1-0 with a 1.50 ERA in 12 relief appearances...struck out 18 in 12.0 innings.
