For 4th straight season, pitched primarily in relief, posting a 5.98 ERA in 35 games (6 starts) for Pawtucket of the
Triple-A International League...struggled mightily in April, registering a 37.12 ERA...fanned 9 during 8.0 scoreless
innings during the month of May...went 2-0 with a 0.98 ERA (2 ER/18.1 IP) in May and June...earned lone save, July
25 vs. Ottawa, thanks to a scoreless 9th inning...joined the PawSox rotation on August 15...went 0-2 with a 7.66 ERA
in 6 starts, as opposed to 3-2 with a 4.76 ERA in 29 appearances out of the bullpen...limited opposing right-handed
batters to a .250 mark, but those batting from the left side hit .381.
2004
SUMMARY: Spent most of the year at Triple-A Pawtucket, but made his major league
debut with 2 stints with the Red Sox...made 49 relief appearances in all, going 2-1 with a
8.44 ERA in 11 games with Boston and 3-3 with a save and a 3.74 ERA in 38 contests
in a PawSox uniform.
SHOW TIME: After 172 minor league appearances over 6-plus seasons, earned his first
promotion to the majors May 21 when righthander Scott Williamson was placed on the
disabled list with right elbow inflammation...made his debut the next night vs. the Blue
Jays, earning the victory with 1.0+ inning of relief in Boston's 5-2 triumph...replaced
Pedro Martinez to start the 7th inning with the score tied 2-2...retired the side in order,
including a strikeout of Simon Pond for the first out...following a Mark Bellhorn RBI single
in the bottom half of the 7th, allowed a Reed Johnson bunt single to lead off the 8th and
was pulled in favor of Alan Embree, who picked off Johnson at first...after surrendering a
run in his next outing May 26 vs. Oakland, tossed 7.0 straight scoreless innings over his
next 5 games May 27-June 4...allowed 9 runs in 2.2 innings in his next 3 outings before
returning to Pawtucket June 16 to make room on the roster for Trot Nixon...was recalled
July 2, and picked up the loss that night in Atlanta when he gave up a Nick Green 3-run
homer in the bottom of the 12th...was optioned back to Pawtucket after the game.
AT PAWTUCKET: Ranked 3rd among PawSox hurlers with a 3.74 ERA...worked 2.0 innings
or more in 19 of his 38 outings, including 8 of his last 11...was 1-2 with a 2.55 ERA
(7 ER/24.2 IP) in 15 games April 8-May 19 prior to his first jump to Boston...May 14 at
Charlotte, recorded all 9 outs in his 3.0 innings of work via strikeout, while allowing only
one hit...went 2-1 with a save and a 3.75 ERA (15 ER/36.0 IP) in 23 games after
returning to Pawtucket for good, including a 2.53 ERA (6 ER/21.1 IP) in 9 August
contests...earned his lone save July 20 at Columbus, working a perfect 9th to secure a 5-
4 victory...had a 2.91 ERA (11 ER/34.0 IP) on the road and a 4.59 ERA (17 ER/33.1 IP)
at McCoy Stadium.

SUMMARY: Combined to make 45 appearances, all in relief, for Boston's Double-A Portland
(34 outings), Pittsburgh's Double-A Altoona (3) and Boston's Triple-A Pawtucket
(8) affiliates...had made just 4 career relief appearances over 5 pro seasons prior to
2003, none since 2001...saved 14 games, 2nd to only Sarasota's Juan Perez (18)
among Red Sox farmhands...went 3-1 with a team-high 14 saves and a 2.25 ERA in 34
outings with Portland prior to his trade to Pittsburgh July 22...limited Eastern League
foes to a .212 average...posted no record and a 2.25 ERA in 3 appearances with
Altoona...was reacquired by the Red Sox July 31 and went 2-1 with a 1.93 ERA over 8
outings with Pawtucket the rest of the way in his first career taste of Triple-A.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS: Limited righties to a .205 (25-for-122) batting average while
lefties hit .261 (24-for-92) at his 3 stops...pitched at least 1.0 inning in 43 of his 45
outings...tossed 2.0 innings or more 9 times...had 53 strikeouts in 58.0 innings, an
average of 8.2 strikeouts per 9.0 innings...did not allow a hit with the bases loaded all
season (0-for-9)...limited the opposition to a .120 average (9-for-75) with runners in
scoring position.
MORE 2003 HIGHLIGHTS: Earned his first professional save April 27 at New Haven with
a scoreless 9th inning...went 2-0 with 3 saves over 5 outings May 4-21...did not allow a
run over his final 9 Portland outings, going 1-0 with 4 saves in 10.0 innings June 28-July
21...did not allow an earned run in 25 of his 34 outings with the Sea Dogs, and allowed
more than one earned run just once...made his Triple-A debut with Pawtucket August 1 at

over his first 3 PawSox outings, closed his campaign with 9.2 scoreless innings over his
