Split time between the Cubs and Iowa...Struck out a career-high 9 on 4/27 vs PIT (in 5.2 innings), but lost 7-0...Had a pair of 5-hit shutouts with Iowa...Had a complete-game win 7/3 vs Oklahoma City with season-high 11 strikeouts...Made one start for Orlando (AA) 7/9 during Iowa's All-Star break...Named pitcher with Best Breaking Pitch in American Association by Baseball America.

1996

Began season at Iowa (AAA), but after going 3-1, 3.06 ERA in 8 starts was promoted to the Cubs...Made ML debut 5/16 vs HOU, a 13-1 win...He no-hit the Astros for 5.2 innings until Jeff Bagwell singled - the only hit he allowed in 7.0 innings...Won his next start 5/21 at ATL, 4-2 - a 2-run HR by Marquis Grissom broke 12.1 scoreless inning streak...Recorded first 2 hits of career 7/2 at PIT in 15-7 win - 1st hit was RBI single (Paul Wagner)...On DL 8/20-9/4 with strained right shoulder...Moved to bullpen upon return.

Spent a full season at Orlando...His 151 strikeouts led the Cubs organization and ranked 2nd in Southern League while his 3.29 ERA ranked 7th...Led SL in fewest base runners allowed per 9 IP (9.6) and was 2nd in opponents average (.211).

Began season at Daytona (A), winning first 5 starts...Went 7-3 in 11 starts and was tied for Florida State League lead in wins when promoted to Orlando (AA) 6/9...Finished with a combined 10-8 record with 4 complete games, 3.24 ERA.
