Combined at Triple-A Round Rock (Rangers) and Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (Yankees) to go 2-3 with a 2.83 ERA (76.1IP, 24ER, 86K, 14BB) with 2 saves in 44 appearances (1 start)…made 23 relief appearances for the Express, going 0-1 with 1 save and a 4.24 ERA (34.0IP, 16ER)…stranded 11-of-14 inherited runners (78.6%)… allowed 0R in his final 5G with Round Rock (11.1IP, 8H, 17K, 3BB)…on 6/21, was traded to the Yankees for future considerations…spent the rest of the season with Scranton/WB, where he went 2-2 with 1 save and a 1.70 ERA (42.1IP, 8ER) in 21G… with the RailRiders, recorded 42K and only 4BB, stranding all 6 of his inherited runners…in his final 9G, produced a 0.84 ERA (21.1IP, 2ER, 21K, 2BB) and held opponents to a .200 BA (16-for-80)…made his only start on 8/31 at Lehigh Valley (3.0IP, 2H, 0R, 2K, 1BB)…became a free agent on 11/4 and re-signed with the Yankees on 12/25.
2012
Started the season on the 15-day disabled list with a low
back muscle strain before splitting the campaign between Round
Rock (AAA) and Texas...reinstated from the DL and optioned to
Round Rock on April 14...recalled on May 21 when Neftali Feliz hit the DL with right elbow inflammation...optioned to Round
Rock on June 16 to make room for Justin Grimm on the active
roster...recalled again on June 29 when Mark Lowe was placed
on the DL with a right intercostal strain...optioned on July 14 to
create roster space for Luis Martinez...recalled for the remainder
of the season on Sept. 1.
TEXAS: Went 1-0 with a 9.00 ERA (17 ER/17.0 IP) in 14 appearances over 3 stints with the Rangers (May 21-June 16, June
29-July 14, and Sept. 1-end of season)...opponents hit .257 (18-
70), but he allowed 4 HR in 17.0 innings...right-handed batters
hit just .225 (9-40) with 11 strikeouts and no HR...allowed 6 of
9 inherited runners to score...allowed one run in first 3 appearances, but multiple runs in 4 of 6 outings from May 27-July 3 (15
ER/6.2 IP) to raise ERA to season-high 14.40...finished the season with one run over his final 5 outings at 1.29 (1 ER/7.0 IP)...
recorded the final out in the top of the 13th and Josh Hamilton
hit a walkoff 2-run homer in the bottom of the inning to give him
his lone win, May 26 vs. Toronto...allowed 8 runs in 0.2 IP May
30 vs. Seattle, the fewest outs ever recorded by a Texas reliever
allowing 8+ runs...gave up 5 ER in 0.1 IP July 3 at CWS...had
career-high 4 strikeouts and season-high 2.1 IP, Sept. 26 vs.
Oakland...was on roster for A.L. Wild Card Game vs. Baltimore,
but did not appear.
ROUND ROCK: Went 4-0 with 6 saves and a 1.13 ERA (5
ER/39.2 IP) in 32 appearances with the Express...had 45 strikeouts against just 7 walks...did not allow an earned run from April
24-July 26, a streak of 23.1 innings over 17 appearances; had
26 strikeouts and just 3 walks during the streak...had 6 appearances of 2.0 innings...PCL opponents batted .203 (29-143) with
just 2 home runs.
POSTSEASON: Was on the Rangers' 2012 A.L. Wild Card
roster, but did not pitch...also on club's 2011 ALCS roster for
that series against Detroit, appearing in one game...tossed 0.2
scoreless inning to finish the 8th inning of 5-2 loss in Game 3 at
Detroit, his only postseason action to date...pitched on playoff
teams in 5 different seasons during his time in the Japanese
Pacific League, posting no record and a 7.20 ERA (8 ER/10. 0
IP) over 10 relief appearances.
2011
The then-35-year-old began his first year in the U.S. at
Triple-A Round Rock before becoming the oldest Ranger to make
his major league debut in late May...also became the 4th native
of Japan to appear for Texas, joining fellow right-handers Hideki
Irabu, Akinori Otsuka, Kazuo Fukumori and, later in the season,
Koji Uehara, who became the 5th...Tateyama went on to make 39
appearances for the Rangers, posting one of the best strikeoutto-walk ratios among A.L. relievers.
