Graduated from Pleasant Grove (UT) High School...attended the Community College of Southern Nevada in Las Vegas...his brother, LHP Egan Smith, was selected by the Indians in the 35th round of the June 2008 first-year player draft but did not sign...Egan Smith signed with the Blue Jays after he was selected in the seventh round of the June 2009 draft.
2011
Was on the Reds' Opening Day roster...made 17 apps during 2 stints with Cin...from 3/31-5/3 posted a 5.29era in 14 apps (17ip, 10er) and from 5/17-5/22 posted an 18.00era in 3 apps (3ip, 6er)...was recalled the day before Opening Day, when Jared Burton was disabled...was optioned to Louisville on 5/5, when Homer Bailey came off the DL...spent most of the rest of the season at Louisville, except for a 3-appearance stint with the Reds from 5/16-5/22...in the 4-2 loss on 4/22 at StL threw a season-high 3.0 innings (4h, 1er, 0bb, 0k, 33 pitches)...from 7/1-7/13 was on Louisville's disabled list with right shoulder tendinitis...from 7/1-7/11 made 4 rehab apps for the Arizona Reds.
2010
Was 1 of 10 Reds players to make his Major League debut...after 4 professional seasons as a starting pitcher was converted to a reliever...made 37 relief apps during 2 stints with the Reds...from 6/15-8/23 went 2-2-1, 3.67 in 27 apps and beginning 9/3 through the end of the season went 1-0, 4.70 in 10 apps...began the season at Class AA Carolina (27g, 1-3-9, 5.08, 28.1ip, 38h, 8bb, 14k, 3hr)...on 6/15 was promoted and in that night's 12-0 loss vs LAD threw a scoreless ninth inning in his Major League debut...when he debuted never had pitched in Class AAA...pitched again the next night and recorded his first career strikeout (LAD's Matt Kemp)...in the 11-2 loss on 8/23 at SF threw a career-high 4.1 innings in relief of starter Edinson Volquez, who retired only 2 batters, in the longest outing by a Reds reliever in 2010...from 7/17-8/10 posted scoreless streaks of 11g and 13ip, both season highs...in the 10-inning, 3-2 win on 7/1 at Chi threw a perfect ninth inning to earn his first Major League victory (7th career appearance)...also earned the 8-6 win on 7/5 at NYM and the 12-inning, 4-3 win on 9/10 vs Pit...in the 10-inning, 6-4 win at Oak on 6/21 recorded the final 2 outs for his first Major League save (4th career appearance)...on 9/13 vs Ari was ejected by HP umpire John Hirschbeck for arguing balls and strikes...on 8/24 was optioned to Louisville and made 3 apps for the Bats (0-0, 8.10, 3.1ip, 5h, 1bb, 0k, 1hr) before he rejoined the Reds on 9/3...was not on the Reds' playoff roster.
2009
At Class AA Carolina was a mid-season Southern League All-Star...made just 13 starts because of 3 stints on the disabled list with right elbow and left knee injuries...didn't pitch after 7/2 because of the strained right elbow...was the Southern League's Pitcher of the Week for 5/18-5/24 (2-0, 13ip, 0bb, 10k)... was a non-roster invitee to Major League spring training camp...on 11/20 was added to the 40-man roster.
2008
In 21 starts at Class A Sarasota and Class AA Chattanooga combined to finish 9-8, 3.84...ranked eighth among all Reds minor leaguers in ERA...was the organization's Minor League Pitcher of the Month for April (6gs, 5-1, 1.60)...began the season with Sarasota, where he was a Florida State League All-Star... over a 3-start stretch from 4/30-5/2 allowed just 3 runs over 24.2 innings (0bb), pitching at least 8.0 innings in all 3 starts...was promoted to Chattanooga on 5/25...in 2009 was invited to Major League spring training camp

At Class A Dayton ranked fourth in the Midwest League in starts (26)...allowed 2 earned runs or fewer in 16 of his 26 starts...in 5 starts from 4/27-5/18 went 2-2, 0.88 (30.2ip, 19h, 4bb, 23k), including back-to-back outings on 5/2 and 5/7 in which he fired 6.0 shutout innings...recorded 8 quality starts...on 6/13 vs South Bend gave up just 3 hits over 8.0 shutout innings (0bb, 2k)...on 7/1 pitched 7.0 scoreless innings at Ft.
