Made the Reds Opening Day roster for the first time in his career...went 0-1, 8.49 in five appearances (one start) before he was optioned to Triple-A Louisville, April 23...Was recalled May 23 and pitched 3.1 innings of relief before leaving with an injury...disabled with a cracked rib, May 26-August 16...In a rehab start, became Louisville's All-Time leader with his 35th career win in a 3-2 victory, July 24 vs. Charlotte...finished with 39 career wins at Triple-A Louisville...Reinstated from the disabled list on August 17 and optioned to Louisville, where he finished the minor league season...earned a September call-up and made two more appearances for the Reds...Claimed off waivers by the Twins, October 31.

Spent most of the season at Louisville...ranked fifth in the International League in ERA (3.34)...led the Bats in starts (24), wins (10) and ERA...became Louisville's all-time leader in career strikeouts (384)...among all Reds minor leaguers ranked T2nd in wins and sixth in ERA...made 2 starts (0-2, 3.09) and 5 relief apps (0-0, 3.00) during 2 stints for the Reds...made both starts during his first stint with Cin, on 7/6 at Mets (3-0 loss) and 7/11 at Phi (1-0 loss)...made all 5 of his relief apps after he was promoted a second time, on 9/3...made his season debut in the 3-0 loss at NYM on 7/6 (5.2ip, 7h, 3er, 1bb, 3k, 1hr, 108 pitches, 76 strikes)...took the spot in the rotation vacated by Travis Wood, who made an emergency start the night before when just before gametime Aaron Harang was scratched with lower back spasms...from 4/22-4/29 was on the Bats' disabled list with a blister on his left middle finger...entered the season rated the eighth-best prospect in the organization by Baseball America.

Was 1 of 8 Reds players to make his Major League debut...was the only lefthanded pitcher to start a game for the Reds in 2009...spent most of the season at Louisville (22gs, 9-9, 3.08, 3cg, 1sho)...also made 1 September start for Carolina...among all Reds minor leaguers ranked third in strikeouts (130) and fourth in ERA (3.00)...led the International League in complete games (3), ranked second in ERA (3.08) and ranked T4th in strikeouts (125)...was the organization's Minor League Pitcher of the Month for April (3gs, 2-0, 1.86)...was the IL's Pitcher of the Week from 5/11-5/17 following a 3-0 win vs Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and a 1-0 loss to Norfolk (1-1, 0.64, 14ip, 10h, 1er, 2bb, 15k)...in his 7 starts the Reds went 3-4 and scored 23 runs (3.29 r/g)...produced 2 quality starts...began the season with Louisville and in 10 starts there went 4-3, 2.00 before he was recalled on 6/6 to start against the Cubs...went 0-2, 6.11 in 3 starts for Cin before he returned to Louisville on 6/20...in 12 more starts for the Bats went 5-6, 4.04 before another promotion...made another start for the Reds, on 8/29 vs LA, but between games of the 8/31 DH vs Pit was optioned to Carolina, where he made his 1 appearance before he was promoted for a third time on 9/8...during that last stint with the Reds was bothered by a blister on the middle finger of his left hand but still made 3 more starts before the season ended (2-1, 2.65)...left his start on 9/8 at Col with the blister, skipped a scheduled start on 9/13 at Chi and then on 10/2 vs Pit but was scratched from his final start of the year...when he debuted on 6/6 vs Chi became only the second LHP to start a game for the Reds over a stretch of 236 games (Adam Pettyjohn)...in that big league debut was the victim of a blown save in the 11-inning, 4-3 victory...left leading, 3-2, but the Cubs tied it in the eighth inning with a run off David Weathers...first career strikeout victim was Ryan Dempster...singled off Dempster to become the first Reds pitcher to record a hit in his first Major League plate appearance since Scott Randall singled off Kip Wells on 9/18/03 at Pit...in that debut pitched in front of a sellout crowd...allowed 2 home runs in each of his first 4 Major League starts but just 1 homer total in his last 3 starts...allowed 22 runs overall, including 13 runs produced by the 9 homers (5 solo, four 2-run HR)...became the first pitcher to allow multiple homers in his first 4 career starts since Brett Hinchliffe allowed at least 2 homers in all 5 of his starts for the Mariners and Mets from 1999-2001, the only starts of his Major League career...as a batter for Louisville hit .316 (1hr, 2rbi, 5sh), including a solo home run on 4/17 at Indianapolis off Daniel McCutchen...in the 6-3 loss vs Cubs on 6/6 pinch hit in the 14th inning and struck out to end the game...Baseball America rated his control the best in the organization.
2008
Spent the season at Class AAA Louisville but made 1 rehab appearance for the GCL Reds... among Reds farmhands ranked second in strikeouts (141) and T2nd in wins (12)...ranked fourth in the International League in strikeouts (132), tied with Rigo Beltran for second-most in a season by a Bats pitcher (Mickey Mahler, 142k in 1984)...from 7/18-8/7 was on Louisville's disabled list with a strained right oblique muscle...was International League Pitcher of the Week for 5/12-5/19 (2-0, 13.1ip, 2er)...on 5/12/g1 vs Richmond threw a 7-inning, complete-game shutout but lost his no-hitter with 2 outs to go...threw his other CG on 6/29 at Toledo (9 innings)...in the 8-4 Bats win on 6/24 vs Rochester threw 7.0 scoreless innings...in the 3-0 loss vs Durham in Game 1 of the playoffs allowed 3 solo HR...pitched for Magallanes in the Venezuelan Winter League (6gs, 1-4, 3.42, 26.1ip, 24h, 10bb, 17k)...on 11/20 was added to the 40-man roster.
2007
At Class AA Reading was an Eastern League mid-season and post-season All-Star after going 9-7, 3.94 with 1cg in 21 starts...was acquired by the Reds on 7/30 in exchange for RHP Kyle Lohse and in 7 starts at Class AA Chattanooga and Class AAA Louisville combined to finish 4-3, 2.80...in 28 starts on the season went 13-10, 3.64 with 177 strikeouts and 144 hits allowed in 170.2 innings.
2006
At Class A Lakewood was named South Atlantic League Pitcher of the Year...also was a mid-season and post-season All-Star...led the league in wins (16), ERA (2.03), complete games (2), shutouts (1), innings pitched (168.2) and strikeouts (180)...was the Phillies' Minor League Pitcher of the Month for June (3-0, 0.33)... on 4/8 at Lexington, in his first appearance of the season, threw his first career complete game (6ip, 3h)... went 9-1 from 5/27-7/28...made 22 quality starts in his 27 apps...opponents hit just .194...3 times recorded 10 strikeouts.
