Made his first 18 appearances of the season as a starter, going 7-6 with a 4.96 ERA. The team went 9-9 in his starts, recording nine quality starts. Was moved to the bullpen after the July 11 promotion of Jimmy Nelson. Allowed a Major League-leading 29 HR (27 as a starter). Made his final 21 appearances of the season in relief, posting a 2.89 ERA (43.2 IP, 2HR, 14ER). Went unscored upon over his last nine outings (16.1 IP). Prior to this season had not pitched in relief since July 8, 2012 at Houston (54 straight starts).

relief appearances (9ip, 2er). His first 5 appearances of the season came in relief ... joined the rotation after an injury to
Chris Narveson in late April. Went 0-5 with a 4.80 ERA in his fi rst 15 starts (80.2ip, 43er) and 5-2 with a 2.03 ERA over his
last 8 starts (48.2ip, 11er) .. did not earn his first win of the season until 8/21 vs. Chicago-NL. Produced 11 quality starts ... the team went 11-12 in his starts. Was the victim of 5 blown saves. Struck out 143 batters in just 138.1 innings while recording only 29 walks. Averaged 9.3 strikeouts per 9 innings and only 1.9 walks. Ranked second on the team in strikeouts (143), trailing only Yovani Gallardo (204). Was placed on the 15-day disabled list on 5/24 with a right quadriceps strain ... was reinstated
on 6/26 after making rehab starts at Triple-A Nashville on 6/16 and 6/21. In his fi rst start off the disabled list struck out a career-high 12 batters over 6.0 innings on 6/26 at Cincinnati ... received a no-decision in the 4-3 loss. Also had 10+ strikeout performances on 7/14 vs. Pittsburgh (11k), 9/1 vs. Pittsburgh (10k) and 9/29 vs. Houston (11k) ... prior to 2012 had never had more than 7 strikeouts in a game.
