Went 11-7 with a 3.60 ERA and 142 strikeouts in an injury-shortened season that saw him make just 22 starts and complete 130.0 innings...Was twice placed on the disabled list for right shoulder tendinitis on 6/17 (retroactive to 6/13) and 8/14 (retroactive to 8/7)...Posted double-digit wins, going 10-4 with a 2.44 ERA in 17 starts prior to the All-Star break, after opening the season with a 1-3 mark through his first four starts. After the break, was limited to five starts, going 1-3 with an 8.10 ERA...Despite multiple stints on the disabled list, his 142 strikeouts ranked third on the team and his 11 wins equaled his career high (2009)...Averaged 9.83 strikeouts/9.0 IP, the fifth-highest mark in the majors (minimum 120.0 IP)...Ranked fourth among National League starting pitchers and 12th in the majors (minimum 120.0 IP) with a .219 opponents' batting average...15 of his 22 starts were at least 6.0 innings, including seven starts of 7.0 innings. In those 15 games, Hanson went 11-1 with a 2.60 ERA and a .184 opponents' batting average, and the team record was 14-1...Made his final start of the season on 8/6 at NYM before being placed on the disabled list for the remainder of the season with right shoulder tendinitis...Set a career-high with 14 strikeouts on 6/12 at HOU...Had a five-game winning streak from 6/1-7/16, matching the longest such streak of his career. Pitched at a 1.97 ERA while logging 38 strikeouts in 32.0 IP and holding opponents to a .161 batting average during the stretch...Went 3-0 while posting a 1.42 ERA (3 ER/19.0 IP) in three starts prior to being placed on the disabled list on 6/17. 2010
In his first full season with the Major League Club went 10-11 with a 3.33 ERA over 34 starts. He compiled 173 strikeouts, compared to 56 walks...Was the Division Series Game 2 starter vs. SF. Lasted just 4.0 innings in his first career postseason start, allowing four earned runs on five hits, including a first-inning, two-out, three-run home run to Pat Burrell, but received the no decision as the team went on to win 5-4 in 11 innings. His 4.0-inning start marked his shortest start since 6/27 vs. DET...Led the Braves staff in strikeouts and tied for the team lead with Tim Hudson in games started (34).Was third on the staff with 10 wins...His 34 starts were tied for second-most in the Majors. Did lead the National League in hit batsman with 14...Ranked seventh among National League starting pitchers (min. 185 IP) in fewest homers allowed (14)...Became the only Braves pitcher in the Atlanta era (since 1966) to make at least 30 starts and post an ERA of 3.50 (3.33) or better and still have a losing record (10-11). Hanson joined Warren Spahn (1952) and Denny Lemaster (1963) as the only three Braves pitchers to accomplish the feat since 1950...The Braves averaged just 2.3 runs while Hanson was still in the game and only 4.1 total runs in games in which he starts (13th lowest in the NL). Six times this season Hanson left the game with the Braves leading the game, only to see the lead evaporate and earn no decision...Went 2-6 with a 2.51 ERA in 16 starts after the All-Star break, compared to 8-5 with a 4.13 ERA in 18 starts before the All-Star break...Made five consecutive starts from 7/27-8/16 in which he has pitched at least six innings and allowed at most one earned run, yet went 0-2 with three no decisions in that span. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Hanson is the first pitcher with a streak of five such starts to not earn a win in any of them since 1913 - the first season in which earned runs became an official stat in the AL and NL...Lost a career-high five consecutive games (spanning nine starts) from 7/16-8/27. During the five-game skid, he pitched at a 3.07 ERA, while receiving just 12 runs of support, for an average of 1.94 runs per game...Entered his start on 8/27 vs. FLA, with a 47.2 homerless innings pitched streak dating back to 7/16 vs. MIL (Ryan Braun, 3rd inning). Hanson gave up back-to-back homers to leadoff the 8/27 game, snapping the homerless streak...In 10 starts from 4/30-6/16, went 6-1 (the team record was 9-1) with a 3.79 ERA...Had a four-game winning streak, 526-6/16, a span of five starts. Pitched at a 2.03 ERA while holding opponents to a .206 batting average during the stretch...Surrendered a career-high four home runs in a 7-1 defeat on 8/27 vs. FLA...In the month of July, notched 29.2 innings while going 1-2 with a 2.43 ERA. He fanned 32 batters while walking only six...Suffered a tough-luck, rain-shortened, 5.0-inning, 1-0 loss to the Mets on 4/25 at NYM. The Mets scored one unearned, two-out run in the first inning on two singles, a stolen base and a Chipper Jones throwing error. The game was delayed due to inclement weather in the top of the sixth inning (one pitch was thrown) for 1:39 before it was eventually called...The 5.0-inning, rain-shortened loss on 4/25 at NYM was recorded as Tommy's first career complete game. He threw 93 pitches in 5.0 IP.
2009
Finished third in NL Rookie of the Year voting (2 first-place, 6 second-place and 9 third-place votes)...Was named to the Topps Major League Rookie All-Star team...Despite not making his Major League debut until June, ranked among NL rookie leaders in wins (3rd-11), starts (4th-21), strikeouts (2nd-116), and in innings pitched (4th-127.2)...His .733 winning percentage ranked fourth in the NL...His 2.89 ERA was the lowest ERA for a Braves rookie who made at least 20 starts since 1943, when Nate Andrews fashioned a 2.58 mark when the team was still in Boston...Made his Major League debut on 6/7 vs. MIL and earned a no decision (6.0 IP, 7 R, 6 ER, 5 K, 3 HR)...Won four straight starts before a ND on 7/4 at WSH. Allowed a solo HR to lead off the 7th, the HR snapped his 26-inning scoreless streak that dated to the third inning on 6/12. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, it was the longest streak for a Braves' rookie since Steve Bedrosian's 27-inning scoreless streak in 1982...His victory on 7/20 improved his career record to 5-0. Since the franchise moved to Atlanta in 1966, he was the second Braves pitcher to win his first five Major League decisions...With his eight scoreless innings on 9/9 at HOU and his seven scoreless innings on 9/15 vs. NYM, Tommy joined Pete Smith in 1988 and Paul Marak in 1990 as the only Braves rookies in the Atlanta era to pitch at least seven scoreless innings in two consecutive games, according to Elias...Won his fourth straight start on 8/22 vs. FLA. With the win, he joined Larry McWilliams (1978) as the only Braves rookies since 1900 with wins in nine of their first 11 decisions...On 7/20 vs. SF, struck out 11 batters in 7.0 IP, establishing an ATL rookie record for a single game. It was the most K in one game by a Braves rookie since 9/5/63 (Bob Sadowski, 12 vs. PIT)...Was named the NL Rookie of the Month for June (4-0, 2.48 ERA, .222 opponents BA in five starts)...Entered the 2009 season as the fourth-best prospect in all of baseball, according to Baseball America.
