Drafted by San Diego in the eighth round of the 2003 June Draft...graduated from Kent State University...is the author of The Bullpen Gospels, a New York Times best-selling book that chronicles his life in the minor leagues...has contributed numerous articles to Baseball America and his hometown newspaper, The Canton Repository...serves as a contributing editor for Athletes Quarterly...named Portland Beavers (Padres) 2008 Community Player of the Year...signs autographs with a picture of a "Garfoose," a giraffe-moose hybrid animal that he invented...is active on Twitter (@TheGarfoose) and donated to the Haiti relief effort via his Twitter community...resides in Hudson, Ohio, with his wife, Bonnie.

Spent the entire season on Toronto's major league disabled list recovering from shoulder surgery.
2009
Began the season with Las Vegas of the Pacific Coast league (AAA)... Appeared in 15 games, including five starts, posting a 7.00 ERA, however recorded a 3.65 ERA over his final 10 outings... YOU'RE A BLUE JAY: Made his Blue Jays debut June 4 vs. LAA, tossing one scoreless inning... Pitched in 12 contests until being optioned following the July 27 game... Was 0-0 with a 1.72 ERA at the time of his demotion, allowing runs in only three outings... Did not allow a run in his first four outings, totaling six innings... BACK TO VEGAS: Was with the 51s for the month of August, pitching in nine games, with one start... Posted a 2-2 record with a 1.45 ERA in those contests, while issuing only two walks in his 18.2 innings... Overall with Las Vegas was 4-6 with a 3.75 ERA in 25 games... GOING NORTH FOR SEPTEMBER: Rejoined the Blue Jays on Sept. 1 and remained for the balance, although appeared in only three games... Went scoreless in five innings over his first two outings before yielding four runs in his final game Oct. 2 at BAL... It marked only the 4th time he had been scored upon, and the 1st time he had allowed more than one run in a game... LONG MAN: Tossed more than one inning in seven of his 15 games, throwing a season high 3.0, Sept. 18 at TB... TORONTO BOY: In six home contests, held the opposition to one run in 8.2 innings for a 1.04 ERA... Left-handed hitters batted .326, while right-handed hitters were held to a .220 average.

Made 10 appearances for the Padres including three starts... In his three starts was 0-2 with a 9.72 ERA... Out of the bullpen was 0-1 with a 11.81 ERA in seven relief appearances... Had his contract purchased from Portland (AAA) of the Pacific Coast League on Aug. 23... Made his ML debut at SF Aug 23 at SF, allowing three earned runs over four innings and did not factor in the decision... Appeared in 46 games for the Portland Beavers, making two starts... Had 98 strikeouts in 84 innings, while walking only 28... Named Portland Beavers 2008 Community Player of the Year... The award is presented annually to the player who best exemplifies the goals of the club's Community Outreach Program by making a positive impact on community values, lending his time and energy to a number of causes, events and philanthropic activities throughout the season... Among his many contributions, he spent time with kids participating in a special Challenge League activity day at PGE Park, visited with kids at Doernbecher Children's Hospital and interacted with students at Humboldt Elementary School while serving pizza and talking about career goals... Also led a number of youth baseball camps at PGE Park.

Made 47 apps (1 start) across three levels but spent the majority of the season at Double-A San Antonio where he went 4-1 with 2 saves and a 3.19 ERA (59.1-IP, 21-ER) in 32 games.
