Joseph N. Devine was originally signed by Atlanta scout Billy Best...graduated in 2002 from Junction City (Kan.) High School...earned all-state recognition as a senior and was all-conference all four years... also earned first team all-conference honors as a junior and senior in football...attended North Carolina State University, where he became the school's all-time saves leader with 24...earned All-America honors as a freshman and sophomore...went 5-3 with 12 saves and a 2.03 ERA as a junior in 2005, fanning 72 batters and walking just 10 in 48.2 innings pitched...is married, Erin...has a son, Mason.
2011
Returned to the majors for the first time in three years after missing the previous two seasons following "Tommy John" surgery...began the season at Triple-A Sacramento but was recalled by Oakland May 20...went 1-1 with a 3.52 ERA in 26 games with the A's before he was sent back to Sacramento July 27...spent the remainder of the season with the River Cats ...did not allow a home run in 23.0 innings and has not yielded a round-tripper in 68 games and 68.2 innings in his two seasons with the A's...that is the fifth-longest homerless streak by a reliever in Oakland history...allowed a .214 batting average, which broke down to .163 (7-for-43) against right-handed hitters and .268 (11-for-41) against lefthanders... yielded all six of his extra base hits to lefties (five doubles, one triple)...now has a .159 (29- for-182) career average against right-handers compared to .252 (33-for-131) against lefties...opponents batted .185 with runners in scoring position and were 1-for-11 (.091) with RISP and two outs...has a .215 (20 for 93) career average with RISP...first batters faced were 6-for-21 (.286) with three walks and a hit batter (.400 on-base percentage)...has a .192 (15-for-78) average against first batters in his career...allowed 3 of 10 (30.0%) inherited runners to score...posted a 1.80 ERA and .143 opponents batting average in 12 games at home, compared to a 4.85 ERA and .265 opponents batting average in 14 games on the road...issued eight of his 11 walks on the road...did not allow a run in five outings against American League West teams...has a 0.47 ERA (1 er in 19.0 ip) in 20 career appearances against the West...posted a 1.35 ERA in seven interleague appearances and has a 1.00 ERA (1 er in 9.0 ip) in nine career interleague contests...compiled a 1.17 ERA and .120 opponents batting average in eight day games, compared to a 4.70 ERA and .254 opponents average in 18 appearances at night...has a 0.36 ERA (1 er in 25.1 ip) in 24 day games in two seasons with the A's...opponents were successful in each of their five stolen base attempts off him and are 9-for-10 (90.0%) in his career...tossed exactly 1.0 inning in 19 of his 26 outings.
OAKLAND: Threw a scoreless sixth inning May 21 at San Francisco in his first Major League appearance since Sept. 28, 2008 at Seattle...did not allow a run over his first seven games and 6.2 innings...that extended his scoreless streak to a career-high 16.1 innings dating back to Sept. 5, 2008...his previous high was 13.2 innings (twice, last: Aug. 6-Sept. 4, 2008)...it extended his streak of consecutive innings without an earned run to 33.0, which matched the fifth longest streak in Oakland history...it was second longest by a reliever to Brad Ziegler's 39.0-inning streak from May 31-Aug. 14, 2008...his streak ended June 3 at Boston when he allowed two runs in the seventh inning for the loss in an 8-6 decision...it was the first time he allowed more than one run in a game since April 8, 2006 at San Francisco when he yielded four...tossed a season-high 1.1 innings June 11 at Chicago (AL)...matched his career high with three strikeouts June 16 against Kansas City (fourth time, last: Aug. 10, 2008 at Detroit)...allowed four runs on three hits and four walks in 2.0 innings over his final three outings before he was optioned to Sacramento July 27...was charged with his only blown save July 20 at Detroit but was credited with his only win in a 7-5 decision...walked all three batters he faced July 22 at New York (AL)...allowed an earned run in his final outing of the season, a day game at New York (AL) July 24...that snapped a streak of 29 consecutive day games in which he did not allow an earned run (29.0 innings) ...it was the first earned run he had allowed during the day since April 8, 2006 at San Francisco...was recalled by Oakland Sept. 27, the second-to-last day of the season, and placed on the 60-day disabled list with a right rhomboid strain as the A's needed a 40-man roster space for Kila Ka'aihue.
SACRAMENTO: Was 4-0 with three saves and a 4.24 ERA in 23 appearances with the River Cats... struck out 35 batters in 23.1 innings, an average of 13.50 per nine innings...held the opposition to .183 batting average, including .167 (8 for 48) against right-handed hitters and .206 (7 for 34) against lefthanders... compiled a 0.79 ERA in 10 games at home, compared to 7.50 in 13 appearances on the road... began the season on the temporarily inactive list for the birth of his child...was reinstated April 20 and did not allow an earned run over his first 11 games and 12.1 innings before he was promoted to Oakland May 20...recorded all three of his saves over a four-game span from May 8-16...posted a 9.00 ERA (11 er in 11.0 ip) in 12 games with the River Cats following his option by the A's July 27...allowed his first earned run of the season Aug. 8 at Iowa...that snapped an 11-game, 12.0-inning scoreless streak dating back to April 24...posted a 16.62 ERA over his final five outings (4.1 ip, 5 h, 8 r, 8 er, 6 bb, 8 so).

Missed the entire season for the second consecutive year as he continued his rehab from "Tommy John" surgery on his right elbow April 21, 2009...was one of three Oakland pitchers to miss the entire 2010 season due to "Tommy John" surgery along with Josh Outman and John Meloan.
2009
Had "Tommy John" surgery on his right elbow and missed the entire season...made two Spring Training appearances on Feb. 26 and March 4 before he was sidelined with right elbow inflammation...returned to make one final spring outing March 27 but began the season on the 60-day disabled list...Dr. James Andrews performed reconstructive surgery on the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow April 21... was one of three A's pitchers to have "Tommy John" surgery in 2009, along with Dan Giese (June 9) and Josh Outman (June 30).
2008
The rookie reliever was acquired from Atlanta in the Mark Kotsay trade and posted a 0.59 ERA in 42 relief appearances with the A's...since the earned run became an official stat (1912 in NL, 1913 in AL), his ERA was the lowest in Major League history among pitchers with 25 or more innings pitched...did not allow a home run in 45.2 innings pitched, which set an Oakland record for most innings pitched in a season without a home run...topped the previ-ous mark of 38.2 innings by Vida Blue in 1970...his innings without a home run were second most among American League relievers in 2008 (Jim Johnson, BAL 68.2 ip)...now has a 61-game, 60.0-inning, 241-batter homerless streak...allowed his last home run on April 7, 2006 at San Francisco (Moises Alou)...allowed a .150 opponents batting average, which ranked second lowest among AL relievers (Grant Balfour, TB .143)...it was also second lowest in Oakland history to Jim Roland's .134 in 1970...allowed just three extra base hits, all doubles, and his .170 opponents slugging percentage was the lowest by a ML reliever since at least 1954 (the earliest year reliever splits are available)...issued 15 walks for a .225 on-base percentage, which was second lowest among AL relievers in 2008 and third lowest among relievers in Oakland history...struck out 49 batters for a strikeout to walk ratio of 3.27, which was 10th best among AL relievers...now has 69 strikeouts in 65.1 career innings (9.51 per nine innings)...first batters faced were 6 for 40 (.150) with a walk, a sacrifice fly (.167 on-base percentage) and no extra base hits (.150 slugging percentage)...the on-base percentage was the lowest among ML relievers, the slugging percentage was third lowest in the AL and the batting average was fifth lowest...now has a .158 (9 for 57) average against first batters in his career...allowed 7 of 22 (31.8%) inherited runners to score...compiled a 6-1 record and tied for sixth among AL relievers in wins...was on the disabled list from May 26 to August 1 with a right elbow inflammation...had a 1.23 ERA and .198 opponents batting average in 18 outings when he went on the DL and then did not allow an earned run while holding the opposition to a .097 batting average in 24 outings and 23.2 innings after he returned from the DL...his opponents batting average included a .120 (11 for 92) mark against right-handed hitters and .197 (12 for 61) against left-handers...struck out 35 right-handers and just 14 left-handers...now has a .158 (22 for 139) career average against righties and .244 (22 for 90) against lefties...allowed a .212 average with runners in scoring position, but that dropped to .118 with RISP and two outs...did not allow an earned run in 16 outings and 17.2 innings during the day...did not allow an earned run in 13 outings and 15.1 innings against AL Central teams.

Named by the Braves organization as the Mississippi (AA) Pitcher of the Year...Ranked tied for second in the Braves' system with 20 saves and was second in ERA for a reliever (1.89)...Was recalled from Richmond (AAA) on 9/19 for the sixth and final time in 2007, the other times: 5/22-25 (no games), 6/20-22 (one game), 7/5-18 (two games), 8/3-7 (one game) & 8/24-27 (one game)...Appeared in six playoff games with Richmond, going 0-0 with four saves and a 3.68 ERA...Pitched a total of 50 minor league games between Richmond and Mississippi (AA) this season, going a combined 5-4 with 20 saves and a 1.89 ERA (12 ER/57.0 IP)...Went 2-4 with a 2.06 ERA and a team-high 16 saves in 33 games with Mississippi...Went 3-0 with a 1.64 ERA in 17 games with Richmond and held opponents to a .188 avg...Picked up his first MLB win on 9/22 vs. MIL after getting out of a bases-loaded jam in the 11th inning.

Was the Braves top selection (27th overall) in the 2005 draft out of North Carolina State and became the first Brave since Bob Horner in 1978 to reach the majors the same season he was drafted. ... Became just the fourth player in the last 15 years to reach the majors before Sept. 1 in the same year he was drafted (A. Prieto, 1995-OAK; C. Cordero, 2003-MON; R. Wagner, 2003-CIN). ... Began his pro career at Myrtle Beach (A), where he was 0-0 with a save in four games over five innings. ... Made his first appearance with Mississippi (AA) on 7/4.
