Attended Moeller High School in Cincinnati, where he was a standout in both baseball and basketball...his 1.04 career high school ERA was the seventh-best in Ohio's history when he graduated...as a senior led Moeller to the state baseball championship (7-0, 0.60, 47.1ip, 83k)...was rated the 18th-best senior in America by Team One Baseball and was listed as the 2004 draft's fourth-best prospect in Ohio by Baseball America...also as a senior was The Associated Press' runner-up Mr. Basketball in Ohio, when he shared Division 1 Player of the Year honors after averaging 20.2 points and 6.5 rebounds per game and leading the conference in scoring and field-goal percentage (.654)...that season was rated the 42nd-best basketball prospect in the nation by Insiders.com and the 43rd-best basketball prospect by PrepStars...majored in communications at North Carolina State University, where in 27 career starts and 3 relief apps he went 11-7, 3.80 (149.1ip, 149k)...as a junior was a Baseball America pre-season All-American...as a sophomore made just 7 starts because of a stress fracture in his left hip...at NCSU was a college teammate of 2005 first-round pick Joey Devine...also played 2 seasons on the Wolfpack basketball team, averaging 7.6 points and 3.5 rebounds per game...before he joined Team USA in August 2006 for the FISU World Championships in Havana, Cuba, played for the Orleans Cardinals of the Cape Cod League (6g, 2gs, 1-0, 1.06)...was rated the second-best prospect in that league.

Spent the minor league season with the Yankees' Class AAA affiliate in Scranton/Wilkes- Barre...as a September callup made his Major League debut with 3 scoreless apps for the Yankees, all in relief and all vs the Rays...was promoted on 9/6 and made his big league debut on 9/22 in the 15-8 loss at Yankee Stadium (1.1ip, 1h, 1bb)...also pitched at Tropicana Field in the Yankees' 5-2 loss on 9/26 (0.2ip, 1bb) and in the dramatic 12-inning, 8-7 loss on the final day of the regular season (0.1ip, 1bb)...for Scranton/ Wilkes-Barre went 2-5, 6.52 in his 13 starts and 1-1-1, 5.15 in his 20 relief apps...earned his only professional save in S/WB's 11-2 win at Rochester on 8/21 (3ip, 1h, 0r, 0bb, 2k)...following the season became a free agent after the Yankees declined his 2012 contract option...on 1/4/12 was signed by the Reds to a 1-year Major League contract.
