Jay William Marshall graduated from John F. Kennedy High School (MO)...Was First-Team All-State as a senior... Lettered in basketball and baseball...Attended Jefferson (MO) Community College and helped his team reach the Junior College World Series...Was an All- Region selection.
2009
Split the season between Sacramento (AAA) of the Pacific Coast League and Oakland...Started the season with the River Cats before the Athletics selected his contract on August 9th...Had a stretch of 17 straight scoreless outings from April 27th-June 6th while with the River Cats...The scoreless streak spanned 21.0 innings and he held opponents to a .143 (10-70) average...Led the Pacific Coast League in appearances at the time of his promotion...Had a 1.69 ERA and .234 opponents batting average in 40 outings before the Triple-A All-Star break and was named to the PCL midseason All- Star team...Pitched 1.0 scoreless inning in the game against the International League all-stars, July 15th in Portland, OR...Allowed just six of 41 inherited runners to score while with the River Cats...Did not walk a batter in 7.1 innings over 10 relief appearances with the Athletics before he was shut down in September with rotator cuff tendinitis...Did not allow a run in six of his first seven outings with Oakland.

Was claimed off waivers by Boston during the off-season but was re-claimed by the A's and spent the entire season in the minor leagues...Combined for a 4-6 record, three saves and a 3.71 ERA in 57 appearances with Midland (AA) of the Texas League and Sacramento (AAA) of the Pacific Coast League...Limited lefthanded batters to a .220 batting average over both stops...Did not allow a run over his final seven outings (12.1 innings pitched) before his promotion to Sacramento on May 25th...Held the opposition scoreless over his first eight games with the River Cats for a 22.0-inning scoreless streak from May 6th to June 12th.

Was selected from the Chicago White Sox organization in Major League Baseball's Annual Rule V Draft and spent the entire season on the A's roster...Tied for sixth among American League rookies in games pitched...Allowed just six of 36 inherited runners to score, which tied for the sixth lowest percentage in the AL...First batters faced were 11 for 46 (.239) with three walks and a hit-by-pitch...Made his debut at Seattle on Opening Day, April 2nd, and got the final out of the eighth inning...Recorded his first major league win in his eighth career outing on April 15th vs. New York (AL)...Set a career-high with 2.2 innings on August 12th at Detroit...Struck out a personal-best four batters in 2.0 innings on August 24th at Tampa Bay.

Spent the entire season at Winston-Salem (A) of the Carolina League, where he compiled a 1.02 ERA in 58 appearances, all in relief...Was also 5-1 with four saves...Led the Carolina League and was second among all Single-A pitchers in games pitched...Walked just eight batters in 62.0 innings for an average of 1.16 per nine innings, the lowest mark among CL relievers.

Was 2-0 with six saves and a 2.70 ERA in 29 appearances, all in relief, with Great Falls (R) of the Pioneer League...Tied for fourth in the Pioneer League in appearances and led his team in saves...Did not allow a run in nine straight appearances from August 4th to August 23rd (13.1 innings pitched).
