John Dale Martin... graduated from Burroughs High School (CA) in 2001 and entered that year's draft ranked 20th overall by Baseball America and second in 'Best Command' category among prep pitchers... comes from a baseball family, as father pitched two seasons in the Yankees and Angels organizations, and brother Kevin pitched three years in Cleveland's system.

2011

Split campaign between starter and reliever for triple-A Syracuse in Washington system...Made 14 starts, posting a 3-7 record and 4.42 ERA (75.1 IP/37 ER). Issued just nine walks and struck out 42 in the role...Out of bullpen, had no record and two saves with a 2.78 ERA (32.1/10) in 16 appearances; struck out 30 and walked just eight...Among all Chiefs' pitchers, ranked fourth in innings pitched (107.2) and fifth in strikeouts (72)...Threw a total of 1,555 pitches on season, with 66% of those being strikes (1,024)...Longest starting stretch reached four games, from July 1-20, when he went 1-1 with a 5.23 ERA (20.2/12)...Surrendered a season-high six runs over 4.2 innings in second start of year, April 27 vs. Toledo...Earned first win of season on June 8 vs. Louisville, allowing just two hits and no runs over 6.0 frames. In three wins on season, allowed a total of just two runs on 15 hits over 18.2 IP...In seven losses, allowed three-or-fewer runs on four occasions...Tossed a season-high 7.0 innings on July 29 vs. Columbus (0 R); went at least 6.0 innings in seven of 14 starts...Had two 4.0-inning relief appearances, marking a season high: April 8 at Buffalo and June 13 vs. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre...Earned a 3.0-inning save on August 8 vs. Buffalo, marking first save of year. In 9-start effort with the Nationals, won only one of 6 decisions despite a superior ERA...7 of 9 starts came on the road... went 1-1 with a 2.31 ERA in a pair of starts at Nationals Park...lone win came while allowing 2 runs on 6 hits in 5.2 innings during a 7-6 victory vs. SDP on July 7...saw strikeout rate rise (5.8 from 4.3 in '09) and walk rate decrease (2.1 from 2.8 in '09)...was placed on the 15-Day DL on July 25 with a low back strain...was transferred to the 60-Day DL on Aug. 3...on Aug. 9, had season-ending surgery performed by Dr. Robert Watkins in Los Angeles, CA...the procedure repaired a bulging disk in the lower back...went 0-3 in 3 June starts despite a solid 3.77 ERA...when starting, Washington went 1-8...went 2-2 with a 3.51 ERA in 7 International League starts to earn a spot in Washington's rotation.

2009

Finished 5-4 with a 4.44 ERA in 15 starts for Washington in strong rookie campaign...joined Shairon Martis (5-3) as the only Nationals starter to post a better-than-.500 record...spent the season's first 3 months with Syracuse, but had contract selected by the Nationals, July 2...went a combined 13-7 with a 3.49 ERA in 31 starts for the Nationals and Triple-A Syracuse in 2009, and recorded a 2.9/1 strikeout-to-walk ratio...recorded a double-digit win total (13) for the 4th time in pro career (12 wins in 2008, 11 in 2004, 14 in 2002)...4.44 ERA ranked 2nd among Nationals starters... capped season by winning 5 of final 7 decisions...allowed 2 earned runs or less in 7 of final 11 starts...in the same 11-start span, went 5-2 with a 3.71 ERA (25 ER/60.2 IP)...this, after going 0-2 with a 7.16 ERA in initial 4 MLB starts... went 3-1 with a 3.67 ERA in 5 July starts...4 of 5 wins came on the road, where ERA was 3.43 in 7 starts...9 of 14 home runs allowed came with the bases empty.
Game-By-Game Highlights: On August 9 vs. ARI, secured first big league win in a 9-2 victory vs. ARI (the win capped a series sweep and a perfect 6-0 homestand for the Nationals)...lasted 5.0 innings, allowing one run on 5 hits...fanned David Wright in first inning to pocket first big league strikeout, July 20 vs. NYM.
In Minor Leagues: With Syracuse, went 8-3 with a 2.66 ERA in 16 games/15 starts...in 14-start stretch from May 1-July 4, went 7-2 with a 1.80 ERA (15 ER/75.0 IP)...exited the IL ranked among league leaders in strikeout-to-walk ratio (first, 6.3/1), WHIP (first, 0.97), wins (tied for 2nd, 8) and ERA (6th, 2.66)...pitched for the IL in the Triple-A All-Star Game, played July 15 in Portland, OR.

2008

n first season pitching primarily out of the bullpen, enjoyed All-Star season with Akron of the Double-A Eastern League... pitched in Triple-A for first time since '04...season ERA out of the 'pen: 2.82...season ERA as a starter: 1.78.

2007

Made only 9 starts due to right elbow problems...participated in Instructional League and winter ball in Nicaragua.

2006

Was limited to 14 appearances/13 starts in 2006 as he spent the first half of the season rehabbing from reconstructive surgery on his right elbow ('Tommy John' surgery) performed in July of 2005....Beginning on June 21 he made starts at A Mahoning Valley, A Lake County & A Kinston (1-2, 2.03 ERA, 44.1IP, 30H, 10ER)...Finished up the season for AA Akron in the Eastern League playoffs, where he did not allow a run in 2 appearances (6.0IP, 2H, 0R, 1BB, 6K, 2-21)...Including the playoffs over his last 7 outings he tossed 23.1 scoreless innings (14 hits) and over his last 9 outings he allowed 1 run (1ER) in 29.1IP.

2005

Went 3-1 w/a 2.38 ERA in 10 starts at AA Akron (56.2IP, 42H, 15ER, 8BB, 63K) before his season ended in late June due to elbow problems...Elbow forced him to shut down from 5/1-28 and then from 6/27 thru the end of the season...Surgery was performed in July in Birmingham, AL by Dr. James Andrews...Started off the year by allowing just 1 run (1ER) over his first 3 starts (20.0IP, 7H, 28K), fanning 10 on 4/11 vs. Bowie and 11 in 6.0IP on 4/21 vs. Altoona...Limited Eastern League hitters to a .201 (42-209) average w/3HR and averaged 10.0 SO per 9.0IP...Batters hit .140 (6-43) off him with RISP and .187 (14-75) with runners on...ERA of 2.38 would have been 3rd in the EL at the time of his injury with enough innings to qualify.

2004

Pitching for Kinston, 11 wins ranked 3rd in the Single-A Carolina League...made one Triple-A spot start with Buffalo.

2003

In first season with Kinston, made 16 starts before being shut down in July with a strained right-elbow ligament.

2002

14 wins for Columbus ranked 2nd in the South Atlantic League...rated by Baseball America as CLE's No. 5 prospect.

2001

Was Baseball America Rookie League All-Star after striking out 72 in 45.0 innings with Burlington in professional debut... did not allow a run until 5th pro start...began pro career with 22.0 consecutive scoreless innings.
